How Many?  *  Song Visuals/Board Game  *  Footsteps  *  Picture Book  *  Flashlights / Finger Lights  *  Four Corners  * Shoes  *  Simple ASL

1. HOW MANY TIMES?

How many times do you hear the words "teach me?"

Repeat and have the kids stand/sit each time they sing the words "teach me."

Variation: Do a different action (i.e. stand, sit, jump, arms move, etc.) each time you sing "teach."

2. FOOTPRINT SONG VISUALS AND BOARD GAME

WHAT YOU NEED:

Teach Me to Walk Song bundle

HOW TO USE:

Board Game: Cut out the circle buttons and place them on the green road map as singing, "Teach Me to Walk in the Light" (Children's Songbook, #177).

For Primary Singing Time, print a larger version and give out the buttons as singing. Repeat and as the song is sung, let the kids with the buttons come up and add to the board. (Ask the kids to figure out how many times they hear the words, "Teach me.")

Footsteps: You can use the footsteps in a variety of ways.

Here's a few ideas to get you started:

1. Cut out the bigger footsteps and make a path around the room. Invite a couple students at a time to follow the path as everyone sings. (Let the path lead to a big picture (or life-size cut-out figure of Jesus. By the end of the verse, the kids should be to Jesus). Repeat and invite more kids to walk the path, as time allows.

2. Question Stop: Place the bigger footsteps in a circle on the floor (or the smaller footsteps on the board in a circle). Choose a few kids to come and walk on the footsteps (or choose one child to come up and trace around the circle of footsteps-with a fun pointer (option)- as everyone sings. At the end of each phrase, yell "Stop." Have the child on the footstep of the phrase that was just sung pick up the footstep and read (or you read) the question on the back. Have the students sing that phrase again while they try to discover the answer. Then let the kids answer. Repeat until you've done the questions for all the footsteps.

3. Jesus Guides Us Freeze: As in number two but randomly call out "Stop" and call on a child to name a way that Jesus leads and guides us.

NOTE: If you'd like to do #2 or #3 with more than a couple kids at a time, divide your group into several small groups and give each group a set of footsteps to use as singing.

3. FOOTSTEPS

[Idea Credit: Friend 2005]

  • Missionaries: Sisters HERE or Elders HERE
  • The Second Coming HERE

4. PICTURE BOOK

[Idea shared by Lisa Olcott Glade from Sugardoodle.net]

WHAT YOU NEED:

Paper & Pencil for each child

HOW TO PLAY:

Cut up a bunch of small pieces of paper and handed out four pieces to each child. Sing the song to the kids once, then tell them they are each going to make illustrations to help them remember the words.

Sing the first line of the song, and have the kids make a quick drawing to go with the words. Continue to sing that line a few more times while they draw. Do this line by line for the whole song. Then sing the whole thing again while they make sure they have their four pictures in order. Finally, staple each child's papers into a little "songbook", which they can as they sing

If you have a really big group, do this by class or some other way that makes it a bit more manageable for larger sizes.

5. FLASHLIGHTS/FINGERLIGHTS

[Idea credit: primarynotes29.blogspot]

WHAT YOU NEED:

Picture of Jesus on the board

Flashlights - one for each class teacher

HOW TO PLAY:

Have a picture of Jesus on the board.

Tell the children that today we have to earn our light by singing our best. The class singing the best gets to turn on their light. Turn off the lights (darken the windows, if need be - but don’t scare JR Primary).

Have a teacher point the flashlight at the picture of Jesus.

Sing until all flashlights are turned on.

EXTENSION: Repeat but let kids use finger lights* as you sing.

Explain:

When it’s dark we can’t see clearly. It's easier to become confused in the darkness. We can get the light by following the commandments. When we are with others who also have the light our lights combine to be even brighter. Jesus is our life and our light. We can shine with the light of Christ.

6. FOUR CORNERS

[Credit Idea: Carey Taylor Andreasen]

WHAT YOU NEED:

Word pages/Visuals

HOW TO PLAY:

From Carey: I split the first verse into 4 parts. I posted the words of that part in the 4 corners of the room. Then I split the primary into 4 groups, sending each to a different corner. They learned that part and made up actions for it. Then each group sang their part and taught their actions. Then we rotated until all groups had learned all 4 lines. Kids loved being out of their seats and learned it very quickly.

7. SHOES

[Idea credit: primarynotes29.blogspot]

WHAT YOU NEED:

Bag of different types of shoes (see below)

or printables of shoes (in a bowl)

HOW TO PLAY:

Invite a child to pick a shoe from a bag.

Ask: Who might wear these shoes? How do they help you walk in the light?

Sing a verse

Repeat

SHOE EXAMPLES:

heels = Mother

men's running shoes = Father

child tennis shoes #1 = we can learn from our friends, and also be examples to our friends

child shoes #2 = siblings (same explanation as friends)

slippers = we need to remember to walk in the light at all times - even at night

a pair of men's church shoes = the Prophet

adult church shoes - our Teachers and Leaders

flip flops - we need to be obedient at all times and in all things

boots - we need to be faithful even in times of trial

8. IN THE DARK

[Idea thanks to basicprimarymusic.blogspot.com]

WHAT YOU NEED:

Blindfold

Floor Tape

PREP:

Make a narrow path with tape around the room.

HOW TO PLAY:

Invite a student up to be blindfolded.  Explain that child will try to walk along the narrow path and everyone will help them by singing. When they sing loud, you will know you are going the right direction. When they sing soft, you will know you need to stop and go a different direction. Once the verse is done, stop wherever you are. Lets see how far he/she can get toward the light!

Sing the entire song. When the song is over, ask the child who was blindfolded if they are surprised at how far they were able to get. If time permits, pick a new child to be blindfolded and sing the song again.

BRIEFLY explain to the children how difficult it is to walk through life and learn if we are in the dark. Our parents and teachers have had experiences that can help us find our way, but we must be willing to open our hearts and listen to what they say. We must always strive to walk in the Light. Close with your testimony.
