3. SIGNS & SYMBOLS

WHAT YOU NEED:

I'm Trying to Be Like Jesus Symbols (suggestions below in "how to use")

HOW TO USE:

Display simple pictures with key words from each phrase of the song around the Primary room (such as be like, following, love, do and say, tempted, and listen), leaving the wall or board at the front of the room blank.

Ask the children to listen while you begin singing the song. Invite them to point to a picture they think matches the words you sing. Ask one child to move it to the front wall or board. Have everyone sing that much of the song. Continue singing and repeat the activity for each picture.

Then have the children sing the entire song several times. Briefly testify of the importance of trying to be like Jesus.

Time permitting, gradually remove pictures until all have been removed from the chalkboard.

4. I'M/I PHRASE UNSCRAMBLE

I love this idea for Sr. Primary, thanks to purposefulprimarymusic.com!

WHAT YOU NEED:

"I'M/I (verb)" phrase word strips (see pic -->)

Put "I'm trying" and "I try" on the same colored paper but make the rest on different colors).

HOW TO PLAY:

Unscramble the "I" phrase word strips.

To start, tell the kids to try and count  how many "I'm" and "I's" are in this song.

(There are 6 in just the first verse!). Repeat and have them count again if they missed some.

Repeat the song again and tell them to stand every time they hear any "I'm/I's.

Other ideas:

* Have the kids point to themselves on every "I'm/I" and sing those words in their head.

* Sing the action words: Have the kids only sing the I'm/I (action words), and vice versa:

VERSE 1                     VERSE 2

I'm trying                   I'm trying

I'm following             I'm learning

I'm trying                   I watch

I am                            I try

Extension: Add sign language (or made up actions) to the action verbs and sign as singing.

Place the word strips on one side of the board in random order. Tell the kids that while you sing (or while they all sing), you'd like them to unscramble the phrases from the song by putting the word strips in the correct order on the other side of the board. If they know which phrase comes next, they can silently raise their hand, and then you will come around and tap them on the shoulder for a turn. As you/they continue to sing the song over and over, they can retrieve the word strips and put them into place.

After the word strips are all in order, ask the kids what they notice about the words on the red paper. (They all are about trying). Ask the kids to sing the song again while they think about why the word "try" is important in the song. After you take their answers, it would be a beautiful time to share your feelings about how our Father in Heaven feels about us when we try our best to keep His commandments and be more like Him and His son. The kids thoughtful singing is a wonderful preparation for them to hear your testimony.

5. JESUS PICTURES / PUZZLE

WHAT YOU NEED:

Different pictures of Jesus doing good or 1 bigger picture cut up into puzzle pieces OR

Ways to Show Love Hearts

HOW TO USE:

Put up various pictures of Christ and depending on time, share a couple of short stories of things that Christ did and how we can be like him.

Or, have kids come up and flip over puzzle pieces on the board as singing.

One way to use: After each phrase, ask the students to name something Jesus did and give an example of how we can be like him.

Or use the AS I HAVE LOVED YOU / WAYS TO SHOW LOVE hearts (see #6 Scatter & Gather).

6. SCATTER & GATHER

[Idea credit: Primary Pad]

WHAT YOU NEED:

Ways to Show Love Cards (Things Jesus Taught) - place around the room.

Big Picture of Jesus - place in the center of the board.

HOW TO PLAY:

Explain to the kids that when you tap someone who is singing good, they are to go and find a heart somewhere around the room and bring it back to the board. Tell them if you shout out, "slow motion," it means they are not singing as good as they could and that the "Gatherer" will then have to move in slow motion until they sing better and you say, "good to go," which means the "Gatherer" can move again at a normal speed. (So fun and the kids LOVE it!)

Keep touching different kids to get heart until all the hearts have been placed on the board. Then read what's on each heart. Reinforce that those are things Jesus taught and things we can do to be like Him. Briefly bear testimony of the blessings that come when we try to be like Jesus.

7. PARTNER SCARVES

8. MUSIC VIDEOS

[Idea thanks to Janelle of primarysinging.com]

WHAT YOU NEED:

Music Video and way to play them

You can use any videos you want to play for the kids but here's a few to get you started:

Girl on her guitar (length - 3:18)

Jesus Images (length - 2:22)

Tabernacle at Temple Square (length - 5:16)

Mormon Guitar (no words, length - 3:07)

Church Video Kids Singing (length - 2:47)

Here's an arrangement that I absolutely LOVE, by a totally adorable family!

9. RHYTHM STICK ROLL

WHAT YOU NEED:

Rhythm Sticks for each child

HOW TO PLAY:

See post HERE for instructions

10. WORD TO SIGN REPLACE

[Idea credit: Angie M. Killian]

HOW TO PLAY:

Start by replacing one word (ex: trying) and each time that word comes up in the song, instead of singing it out loud, the kids sing the song in their head and do the sign (or action) for that word. Repeat and replace another word (ex: do and say). Keep repeating till you've replaced several of the words with signs. [To challenge Sr. Primary, add more and more signs for words].
