HOW TO USE:

Start by showing the kids a gift (gift box or bag) and telling them that inside is a very precious gift, one that no amount of money can buy and that each of them have. Open the gift (or let a child come open it) and take out the "my life" gift tag. Show it to the kids and point out how their lives are precious gifts from Heavenly Father.

Then tell the kids that there are several picture cards placed around the room that go along with the song and as you sing, you are going to touch some kids heads and you want them to go and find a picture and put it up on the board. Keep singing until all the pictures are on the board. Then repeat and have the kids help you find the right picture for each phrase and place in order. Then repeat the verse to check for the correct order.

EXTENSION ACTIVITY - "WHAT'S MISSING?"

Put the pictures on the board in order, but flip over some of the pages so only the back is showing. Have everyone sing then stop on each phrase and have the kids sing back what is missing. Flip over the picture and repeat singing the phrase to check if they are right. Repeat for each phrase of the song until all the pictures have been turned over.

Repeat the entire process again, if desired, and change the pictures that are "missing" (i.e. flip over a different picture in each phrase so only the back is showing).

2. PICTURE BLURS GAME

[Idea thanks to afprimarysingingtime]

A fun game of picture distortions, guessing and singing!

WHAT YOU NEED:

Distorted pictures (display size and/or tiny envelope size, one for each primary class)

that go along with each song phrase - available in the

Get this game in the I Will Follow God's Plan Bundle

HOW TO PLAY:

Envelope Class Sets -

Print a smaller set of blurs for each class and as you sing the song, the kids should try and put the pictures in order. (It may take you singing the song through 2-4 times for each class to get finished. Then they have heard the song a lot and you can continue on to the other games to teach them the song).

Display Size Set -

Put the pictures up on the board (in order of the song), in a line horizontally across the board. Tell the kids the pictures go along with each phrase of the song and they should try and figure out what each picture is. Sing each phrase then stop and ask the kids what they think the picture is that matches with the phrase you just sang. Sing the phrase again if they need. Once they guess the picture, sing the phrase again and have them sing the phrase back to you. Repeat with each phrase till you've done the whole verse.

For Junior Primary, you can just use the pictures without the blurs, if you need, and place them out of order and as you sing each phrase, have the kids help you figure out which picture goes with the phrase. Then put the pictures in order - a phrase at a time - as you and the kids repeat singing the phrase. Move on to the next phrase and do the same thing until you've sung the whole song and all the pictures are in order. Then repeat the song again to check and make sure the picture order is right.

FIX THE ORDER GAME (great for lots of song phrase repetition) -

Mix up the pictures displayed on the board and call on kids to come up and select the right picture for each song phrase. (Sing the phrase as you choose a child then sing the phrase again as the child finds the right picture, then sing the phrase again once they have chosen to check). :)

3. RIGHT OR WRONG?

[Idea thanks to singingmagic.blogspot.com]

A fun game of right or wrong word pictures.

WHAT YOU NEED:

Song Visuals

Picture Visuals of objects NOT in the song

Or actual objects instead of pictures

Get this Game in the I will Follow God's Plan for Me Bundle

HOW TO PLAY:

Have a "right" and a "wrong" option for key visuals in the song.

You can play this game as a group (have the kids point to the correct picture), or with individual kids (call on a reverent child to come to the front and choose for each song phrase).

Hold up two pictures for the first phrase of the song. Tell the kids you want them to figure out which picture is correct and goes along with the phrase of the song you are singing. Sing the song phrase then have the kids point to the picture they think is correct. Repeat the phrase (have them sing it with you), to check if they were right. Continue for each song phrase till you have sung the whole song. Then repeat the whole song at once, pointing to each picture as you sing (or let a student come up and point as everyone sings).

EXTENSION: Make it harder (especially for Sr. Primary, by adding several "wrong" options along with the "right" one for each song phrase.

NOTE: You can also bring objects from home and call on a few kids to arrange the objects in order of the song as everyone sings (give them 1-2x's through the song). Then everyone sings and check to see if the order is right.

And to make it even harder, throw in objects (like a banana or a ball or keychain) that are not in the song on the table along with the ones that are and have the kids arrange in order with only the correct objects.

NOTE 2: Sing through the song, showing the kids the objects you chose to represent each song phrase before you play the game above.

4. TILE ENVELOPE WORD GAME (Chorus only)

[Idea thanks to Sharla Dance]

A challenging word puzzle game perfect for Senior Primary!

WHAT YOU NEED:

ONE FOR EACH CLASS OR ENOUGH FOR SOME SMALL GROUPS

Tile Words - get it here

Puzzle page  - get it here

NOTE: THIS IS FOR THE CHORUS ONLY AND DOES NOT INCLUDE TILES FOR THE LAST LINE OF THE CHOURS ("Then I will be happy on earth and in my home above.").

HOW TO PLAY:

Hold up a word tile and show the kids: "This is a word tile. I have some more paper tiles. some of the tiles have the whole word on them and some only have part of a word on them and you'll have to find the other tile to make the whole word. Your challenge is to put the tiles together as you hear them in the song BEFORE I sing the song 8 times."

(You can then have the kids divide themselves into groups-with help from teachers- or do the activity by class. Then have the teachers pass out the items to each group).

Tell the kids to put out all the words on the floor so they can see them all.

Start to sing, walking among the groups. Watch where the kids are having trouble and emphasize those words to help them as you sing. Keep track of how many times you have sung the song. If any groups finish before others, ask them to be singing helpers.

Once everyone has completed the puzzle, have them all sing along with you.

6. ACTION WORDS

[Idea thanks to Sharla Dance]

Sing the song and ask the children to follow your hands. Have the kids sing along when ready.

My life is a gift – hold out hands as if holding a gift

My life has a plan – point to my brain

My life has a purpose – point straight out with my arm and hand

In Heaven it began – wave hands above my head

My choice was to come – point first to one side, then to the other as if making a choice

to this lovely home on earth – make a big circle with your hands representing an earth

to seek for God’s light – hand over eyes as if seeking for something

to direct me from birth – arms cradling and rocking an imaginary baby

AND HERE IS ANOTHER VERSION (click link to go to the video*)THANKS TO KLYSTA SCHLOOF that is great because it combines action movements with beat movements!

*Note: This link is to the LDS Music Leader FB group so to see the video you will need to be a member of the group.

I will follow God’s – drum roll on the thighs

plan for me – point to the heavens and then to yourself

holding fast – grab hold to an imaginary iron rod

to his word and his love – hold out your hands like an open book then pull them into a hug

I will work – pretend to push and pull something

and I will pray – pretend to fold your arms as if praying

I will always walk in his way – pretend to have your hands “walk”

And I will be happy on earth – sign language for happy, then arms big and round like an earth

and in my home above – point to self, put your hands together like a roof, then point up

EXTENSION ACTIVITY:

Ask for five children who can do the actions with you to come up front and do the actions for the other children. I usually turn and face these five children a little further back in the room. Ask the children to follow these five children. Sing the song again and do the actions. If there is time, have each of these children pick a partner or two to come up and do the actions with them. Sing the song again doing the actions while this larger group is in front.

START WITH EVERYONE HAVING RHYTHM STICKS AND PLAYING THE SAME PATTERN AS YOU ALL SING.

Have the kids listen to the pattern on the rhythm sticks.

10. RHYTHM BAND

[Idea thanks to Sharla Dance]

(Stick with 1 rhythm pattern and only one set of instruments for Jr primary but add in other rhythms and instruments for Senior Primary).

WHAT YOU NEED:

Rhythm sticks, egg shakers, jingle bells, egg cartons w/1rhythm stick, maracas

HOW TO PLAY:

Give one set of instruments to each class so all the kids in one class have the same instruments. (I suggest bagging the instruments before singing time and putting the bag under each teachers chair and having the teachers pass out and collect the instruments).

Have the rhythm posters displayed up front (hung on the board).

START WITH EVERYONE HAVING RHYTHM STICKS ONLY AND PLAYING THE SAME PATTERN AS YOU ALL SING.

Have the kids listen to the pattern on the rhythm sticks.

Tap the sticks on your thighs once then click-click-click and raise  hands up and sticks apart for the rest. Then have the kids do the rhythm with you (with their pretend rhythm sticks) a couple times as you sing until you get through "...in heaven it began." Then stop and tell the kids they are ready to use their own rhythm sticks and have the teachers pass out sticks to each of their class members.

Tell the kids to follow you with the pattern as the teachers pass out the sticks. "Pat click-click-click, rest" and keep saying that and repeating the tapping till all the kids have their sticks.

Sing the song and do the pattern then say, "Freeze!" after "...direct me from birth," and tell the kids there's a new pattern now.

Click-click-click pat-pat (second rhythm on the poster above). Do the new pattern a couple of times then sing, from the beginning, all the way till the end of the song.

EXTENSION ACTIVITY (RHYTHM BAND):

Divide the room in half and have 1/2 the kids do one pattern and the other 1/2 do the other half. Have the teachers pass out other instruments for each class.

EXTENSION ACTIVITY 2: To make it even harder, have only certain instruments play at certain times.

Immediately jump in and start the activity, even if only half of the children have their new instruments. (Transitions are the places you lose children’s attention, so you make the transition quickly.)

“Egg cartons! Let’s hear you play to this beat. Beat, beat, beat, beat. Freeze!”

“Jingle Bells! Let’s hear you play to this beat. Beat, beat, beat, beat. Freeze!”

“If you are an egg carton player, you play here.” (point to the line) “If you are a rhythm stick player, you play here.” (point) If you are a jingle bell player, you play here.” (point) “Ready orchestra?” [My suggestion: Color code the words and the rhythm notes fit to each instrument].

After they have practiced the top pattern twice, start to sing, “My life is a gift….” Sing all the way to “…from birth" then call out, “Switch to here!” and play in the same beat pattern, but now on the lower pattern of the poster as singing, “I will follow God’s plan for me….”

If there is time, have kids switch instruments with a friend.
