Tips to teach Hymns to Children

I love these tips from Sharla Dance on teaching hymns:

1. Divide and conquer.

2. Choose the important concept to teach.

3. Give the children more “hooks” and different experiences with a hymn

than you normally would a smaller song.

For specifics and video examples, visit here blog post HERE.

1. DIRECTED LISTENING / BIG QUESTIONS

Ask questions and have the kids listen for answers (ask one thing at a time and repeat as needed for subsequent answers or ask and sing phrase-by-phrase).

Examples of Things you can ask:

-How many times do you hear the word "live"?

-Who lives?

-What kind of comfort does Jesus give?

-He lives to feed my what kind of soul?

-When does Jesus bless? (in times of need)

-What does He bless me with? (his love)

etc.

Hello and welcome to LDS Primary Printables. I'm so excited you are here!  LDS Primary Printables provides Come Follow Me, Gospel Topics, Primary Events, and Primary Singing Time Resources for Families, Primary Teachers and Primary Music Leaders.

2. BIG QUESTIONS

WHAT YOU NEED:

Word Strips / Pictures of Song Phrases

HOW TO PLAY:

Display the questions on the board (who, what...). Kids match the word strips (or pictures for song phrase) answers with the questions.

Example:

WHAT do you know?

“I know that my Redeemer lives!” (Sing the first phrase)

WHAT does this sweet sentence give us?

“comfort!” (Sing that phrase alone, then rewind to sing the two together)

WHO lives?

"He lives, he lives who once was dead."

"He lives my ever-living head."

WHAT does He Live for?

"...to bless me with His love."

"...to plead for me above."

"...to calm my troubled heart."

"...all blessings to impart."

Verse 2 - see Verse 2 WORD ORDER game below

Verse 3 - see Verse 3 PICTURE ORDER game below

3. STAND/SIT

HOW TO PLAY:

Have the kids stand every time they sing, "He lives."

Extensions:

Whenever they hear words relating to LIVES (lives, living,  they will raise Jesus Christ stick puppet. The next time I sing the song, I will have them stand up, then on the 3rd time, I will ask them to raise up the picture and stand up at the same time.

Do a different action for "He lives."

Let 1/2 of the room do one action and the other 1/2 another action. Then repeat the verse/chorus and switch .

4. VERSE 1 - PICTURE MATCH

WHAT YOU NEED:

Song Visuals (or objects) that represent the different phrases (ex: blanket for "to comfort me when faint", bread for "my hungry soul to feed", etc.).

HOW TO PLAY:

Invite one child up to hold each item (or picture of the items) and have the kids figure out which picture goes with which phrase.

Out of Order

Put the pictures up on the board and have the kids arrange in the correct order.

Take-Away

Put the pictures up on the board and gradually take one away until there are none left.

VERSE 2 - WORD ORDER

WHAT YOU NEED:

Word Strips

HOW TO PLAY:

Write "He Lives to..." on the board and place the strips on the board, out of order. As you sing the verse, invite kids up to put the words in order. Repeat as needed till all the words have been placed. Sing the verse again to check for accuracy.

VERSE 1,3,4 - PICTURE ORDER

WHAT YOU NEED:

Pictures of Each Phrase

HOW TO PLAY:

Same as Verse 2 word order except us3 the picture visuals instead of word strips.

4. WORD ORDER / FINGER TAPS / EGG SHAKER

I love this idea by In a Pinch Primary Music!

For Sr. Primary they can come up to the board and arrange the word strips. Both Jr. and Sr. Primary can do the tap & holds.

WHAT YOU NEED:

Word Strips - color coded by rhyming words - do for any of the verses

Finger Taps Extension:

Have kids tap Jesus stick puppet on their palm or leg and move in a rainbow arch on the held notes. (Tell the kids the composer used a fermata on the long notes. How is that significant to the meaning?)

5. WAVE PATTERN OSTINATO

An ostinato is a repeated rhythmic pattern. Use a variety of different instruments to play this ostinato: rhythm sticks, maraca, egg shaker, wrist bells, etc.

Wrist bells are perfect for this ostinato because they allow hand movement along with instrument playing, which fits the pattern very well.

HOW TO PLAY:

Move like big/small waves as you sing: Move in the rhythm of the ostinato in waves (out-in bigger / out-in smaller / out-in bigger). Start the ostinato & repeats after the pick-up notes. (He LIVES all glory to his name - start half note on LIVES).

Repeat the motion but while kids wear wrist bells.*

Repeat and use Jesus stick puppet figure to move in waves in the ostinato rhythm.

Repeat and use ribbon wands* to move in waves in the ostinato rhythm: Do side-to-side waves (right/left for half notes and then circle overhead - for 4 quarter note beats instead of 2 quarters and a half note).

Repeat and tap 2 fingers on palm, moving fingers up on held notes (half notes).

Repeat and play with rhythm sticks, moving up on held notes (half notes).

9. MELODY MAP

10. DRAWING

For each song line, pick a keyword from the phrase. Have the kids take turns drawing something for those keywords on the board or on a paper as the kids sing the phrase. Repeat each phrase 2-3 times to give the kids time to draw.  If you have the kids draw on a paper, write the keyword on the bottom of the page and use them another week for review. The kids love seeing their artwork as the prompts.
