1. SONG CODE VISUALS

WHAT YOU NEED:

Spirit of God Visual Code Pictures

HOW TO PLAY:

There are several ways you can use these song visuals.

Option 1: Display the symbols on a poster and use as a type of visual “flipchart.”

Option 2: Mix up the picture symbols and let students arrange in the correct order.

Option 3: Make 2 copies & use as matching game. Make up other games as you see fit.

2-4. SONG ACTIONS & SOUNDS + RIBBON WANDS

[Idea thanks to Sharla Dance]

To see a video of Sharla showing the action from a Payson Church workshop, click HERE.

(STARTS AT 0:27:37 and again at 1:14:21)

If  you don't want to watch the video, the movement patterns are written out below.

SOLO MOVEMENT:

Pat, Pat, Pat, Pat, Clap, Clap, Clap, (hold)

How many pats 4. How many claps? 3

Pat, Pat, Pat, Pat, Clap, Clap, Clap,(hold)

The Spir    -    it     of     God             like    a ...

EXTENSION:

Change pattern to: Pat, Pat, clap, clap (and repeat)

...to visit the earth

Change pattern to: Pat, Pat, clap, clap, cross-cross (cross one arm over the other, snap, snap

OTHER WAYS TO VARY:

  • TURN DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS: Pat/Clap pattern, say "Freeze!" at the end of a phrase, then turn another direction. Keep changing directions every phrase or two as singing and performing the actions.
  • PARTNERS: Get a partner and do the patterns together - Pat, Pat, Clap, Clap, Forearm together one arm/Forearm together other arm, Clap Partners hands (high five), Clap partners hands. So: Pat, Pat, Clap, Clap Forearm touch-forearm touch, Partner Clap, Partner Clap

ADDITIONAL ACTIONS/SOUND EFFECTS:

See video at 1:14:21

Do the actions as a group then invite 5 people up to the front to do the actions. Then repeat and invite 5 more people up and all 10 kids do the actions.

THEN REPEAT and have everyone SING IN THEIR HEADS while doing the actions (have the pianist play along).

5. SONG KEYWORD ACTIONS AND/OR ASL

Choose keywords for each of the verses and make up movements to those keywords.

Ex: Verse 1

Spirit - bring hands up and out like drawing a heart

Fire - hold hands up and wiggle fingers fast

Visions - look up and put hands up in sort of prayer position

Glories of God - raise arms up all the way pointed to Heaven as looking up

Angels - make a halo with hands above head (even though angels don't really have any)

6-7. LAMP OBJECT LESSON & "SPIRITUAL GOOSEBUMPS"

[Idea thanks to Jean Ellsworth]                                      [Idea thanks to Chelsea J. Bean]

WHAT YOU NEED:

A lantern (that works and that the light grows from small to brighter)

Optional - glow stick or finger lights for kids

Dot stickers

Talk to the kids briefly about how fire burns and spreads its light and heat and how the spirit of the God is spreading its light and glory across the earth: how it started small with the Prophet Joseph Smith and is growing and growing. Turn off the lights and turn the lantern on. Start with just a tiny light and gradually turn on to spread more light. Relate that to the Spirit of God and how when we are faithful and obedient the Spirit will grow... (Jean shared that this was very effective for helping her kiddos learn it, without any of the games. Thanks, Jean!) ;)

EXTENSION: Give each child a glowstick or light and emphasize that one light does shine in the darkness but how much more light is there if there are many lights in the darkness? And relate to how it's so important that we let our own lights shine and be good examples of Jesus Christ and share the gospel with others... To spread forth the kingdom of heaven abroad...(vs.3)

FOR "SPIRITUAL GOOSEBUMPS"

Talk about how this song is so special - how it has been sung at EVERY temple dedication since the Kirtland in 1836! Remind them how the spirit (and this song) can give us goosebumps... Then have the kids give you (or whomever you choose) “spiritual goosebumps,” i.e. singing measles, while they sang.

8. CRACK THE CODE

[Idea thanks to Amy B. Norman]

WHAT YOU NEED:

Crack-the-Code for the Song (get Amy's crack-the-code

for the first verse here)

(This works for Sr. Primary)

9. CUP MOVEMENT

[Idea thanks to AnnMarie Murdock]

WHAT YOU NEED:

Cups for Each Child

HOW TO PLAY:

See video here for AnnMarie's cup actions and movements

See my extensions below.

Basic Pattern: Pat cup on lap, Tap-Tap (on bottom-cup turned upside down).

EXTENSIONS AND VARIATIONS:

  • SWITCH HANDS: Say "FREEZE" after each phrase and have the kids switch which hand holds and which taps.
  • Do pattern above but with a partner - pat cup on own lap then hold cup so your partner can tap your cup on the taps.

10. SPIRIT OF GOD SPOT IT

This Primary Singing Time Song Visuals SPOT IT GAME for "The Spirit of God" will add so much fun and excitement to your primary singing time while reinforcing the words and song message AND while helping the kids learn and memorize the song even better!

WHAT YOU NEED:

Spirit of God SPOT IT Game Visuals

HOW TO PLAY:

Place two picture visual pages on the board (note: pages are numbered in order according to song phrases). Sing the corresponding song phrase then say "FREEZE" and ask the kids which two items are the same and what the pictures have to do with the song. Then replace the pictures with next set and continue till you’ve sung the whole song. Some of the songs include related pictures on the page and some do not. If the pages have related images to the song phrase, briefly ask the kids how the images relate to the phrase they just sang. Take their answers then sing the phrase again. (Good way to add in more repetition).

11-13. SPIRIT OF GOD (MELODY MAP - WORD MEANING MATCH - VERSE COLORING PAGES)

WHAT YOU NEED:

Spirit of God Singing Time Bundle

MELODY MAPS

What's different about these?

There's 3 different versions - One with picture symbols along the melodic contour, one with just the melodic contour lines (for verses only) and dot lines for the chorus).

What's different fun?

You can challenge the kids to match up the picture melodic contour maps with the melodic contour line maps.

WORD MEANING MATCH

Help the kids understand what each song phrase means in simple, child-understandable language. Play the game and match up the phrases with the words or pictures of each song phrase! (Learn more about the super challenge and the bundle here).

COLORING PAGES

Let a few kids come up and color for 10 seconds at a time as everyone sings. Keep repeating the verse until the entire picture is colored. (4 coloring pages - 1 for each verse).

14. SPIRIT OF GOD SONG STORY

Instructions, Story and Pictures HERE.

15. SPIRIT OF GOD SCARF MOVEMENT

If you plan on starting with the chorus, Sharla Dance demonstrates what she calls “action-word actions” to the chorus of The Spirit of God at 1:14:20 into the video.

Have the kids mimic you as you and the teachers sing along. The kids will follow you as best they can the first time through. Then break it down as Sharla shows you in the video by defining the actions, like “lamb” and “glory” and ask the kids why those actions may be appropriate for those particular words.

Once you’ve got the chorus actions down, add some scarves to it!  Scarves are totally optional but very fun!!

Here's a scarf set option from Amazon (note: affiliate link).

That's it for now. Happy Singing!
