1. MELODY MAP

Display the melody map on the board. Ask the kids if they see pictures and symbols.

Quickly point them out and tell the kids to see if they can discover what words go with the symbols

to spread out the repeats of the number of times the kids hear the song).

Priesthood - star symbol dots

Restored - circle arrow dots

Truth - rays down dot

Man - person dot

Earth - earth dot

Power - lightening dot

Tell the kids as you sing and point that when you get to those picture symbols that they should sing those words out loud. (Once the kids know the song better, you can repeat and switch - have the kids sing all the words except the picture/symbol dots while you sing those).

You can also mix these up and have the kids come and put them in order;

Or

Write the main words (priesthood, restored, truth, man, god, earth, power, again) on different post it notes and give them out to kids and have them come place the post-it notes on the melody maps where they go.

There are several other games you can make up with the melody maps. See the post that talks about melody maps vs song maps and more ideas on how to use HERE.

Be creative and have fun! :)

2. TRUMPET FANFARE

WHAT YOU NEED:

Toy Trumpets (12) - hand out trumpets and sing, repeat and let 12 others hold the trumpets.    Repeat until all students have had a chance to hold a trumpet.

Or, as one brilliant Music Leader suggested, just get paper cone birthday hats (can paint them gold if you are feeling ambitious) and let kids use those as trumpets!

Prep Suggestion: Put enough trumpets in bags BY CLASS and leave that bag under the teachers chairs and let them pass out and collect the instruments.

HOW TO PLAY:

Prep by showing the students the trumpet and that they will be using it but it SHOULD NOT go in their mouths. Show the kids how to use it - put the mouthpiece ON THEIR CHIN. Then tell them they will each get a chance to use a trumpet and show how glad they are that they have the gospel and the priesthood. For practice and to prep the rhythm, have all the kids put a fist on their chin and say the fanfare rhythm with you:

On the held notes, students trumpet ("doo") a fanfare ostinato (repeated rhythm pattern) instead of singing the words (i.e. restored, man, again) - see picture above for rhythm pattern.

Jr. Primary - BEFORE PASSING OUT THE TRUMPETS, have the kids say and tap (2 fingers on palm):

"ta ti-ti ta ta" or "ta ta ta ta" if the kids can't do the other. Sing the song and when you get to the long held words, tap the rhythm pattern. (Repeat as many times as necessary for the ties-held notes).

Then give 12 kids the trumpets and repeat. Kids without tap on their hands (or with rhythm sticks) and kids with trumpets "doo" the rhythm: doo doo-doo doo doo.

Sr. Primary - Same process BEFORE passing out the trumpets but kids use the more challenging rhythmic pattern (see picture above - "ta tiki-ti ta ta"). If you'd like, you can start with the more simple rhythmic ostinato then add a challenge to the kids to see if they can do the harder pattern.

Then, add another layer of challenge and divide the room in half and have 1/2 do the ta ti-ti ta ta pattern and the other half do the ta tiki-ti ta ta pattern.

EXTENSION:

Have a student or teacher ADD BELLS to the trumpet part.

Get PDF of bells notes here, thanks to Adrienne Bigler Weighall.

3. LAST SINGER STANDING

Did you notice how this song has some LOOOOOONG held notes?

Well, this lends itself perfectly to breathing contest game called LAST SINGER STANDING.

(Idea thanks to Shelleyseconds.weebly.com)

WHO WILL BE THE - LAST - SINGER - STANDING...

HOW TO PLAY:

Have all of the children stand up. Have the pianist play a G and hold. The kids sing on "ah" and stay standing until they run out of breath from singing that note. When someone runs out of breath, they quickly take a seat.

Have everyone sit down.

Show the kids the song posters with the music notes on them. Tell them when they sing the long words, they should stand up and try and hold the note the full amount but sit down as soon as they run out of breath.

4. PICTURE WORD MEANING MATCH

[Good for Senior Primary]

WHAT YOU NEED:

(8) Keyword and Definition Word Strips

Keywords: priesthood, restored, truth, God has spoken, God's power,

Definitions: Authority to act in the name of God, brought back, facts/what actually happened, prophets/Spirit, priesthood

(4) Pictures (print or get pictures to represent each word).

Priesthood: God's Power: Picture

Restored: brought back:  Picture

Truth: what actually happened, fact/reality: Picture

God has spoken: (How does God speak? Through his prophets, through the Spirit...): Picture

God's Power: Picture

5. POOL NOODLE MOVEMENT ACTIVITY

WHAT YOU NEED:

Pool noodles cut into small sections - enough for each child.

HOW TO PLAY:

Use pool noodles to move along with the song.

swish-swish-swish-swish clap together-out

(Movement pattern available in "The Priesthood is Restored" bundle).

6. LONG NOTE ACTION

GREAT FOR LOTS OF REPETITION!

HOW TO PLAY:

Let kids come up with ways they can move (on the long notes only) - to the beat & free.

Repeat and choose a new child/new action  to do each time.

Need some ideas, get 14 Action Cards - in the printables library

7. Drum/Rhythm Sticks & Percussion Ensemble

WHAT YOU NEED:

Rhythm sticks for each child and a few drums to rotate.

HOW TO PLAY:

Teach kids a rhythmic ostinato pattern (see ostinato 1 in the picture below) before handing out any instruments. Practice the pattern then add singing with it (have kids tap 2 fingers on palm).

Pass out instruments and repeat singing while playing.

For Sr. Primary (challenge): For more of a challenge, change the ostinato to a harder pattern (use trumpet fanfare ostinato, see picture below - ostinato 2).

For an added challenge, divide the group in half and assign half the kids to play ostinato pattern1 and the other half to play ostinato pattern 2. (You could also let 1/2 the group use rhythm sticks and 1/2 the group use egg shakers or some other "instrument.").

8. BONUS IDEA: SIMPLIFIED ASL

9. SIMPLE CLAPPING PATTERN

[Idea and picture thanks to Tiffany Abbott Fuller]

Pattern = pat, pat, clap, clap (2x) then Pat wait - Clap up high wait

The green lines are repeated 3x (once all the way through for each pic) and then

the yellow lines.

See her post with a short video here.

10. YOGA POSES ON THE LONG NOTES

[Idea thanks to Tara Lyman Kerr]

Do the song with yoga poses  - Hold up a yoga pose card on the long notes and have the kids hold that pose until you signal to go to the next line with a different yoga pose. (Feel free to exaggerate how long you have the kids hold the yoga poses, especially if they are standing on one leg or doing anything else difficult). The kids will eat it up!
