Looking for some fun Christmas Primary Singing Time Ideas that Music Leaders and Primary kids alike will love?  Then give these Primary Singing Time Activities a try...

SIMPLE, ENGAGING CHRISTMAS PRIMARY SINGING TIME IDEAS

1. SANTA POSES

WHAT YOU NEED:

Santa Pose Cards

HOW TO USE:

Option 1: Sing the song and randomly call out "freeze" during the song.

Then hold up a card and have the kids make a pose after each "freeze."

Option 2: Make a different pose for each song phrase.

Option 3: Choose keywords and a pose for each keyword.

(I suggest displaying the poses on the board with the keyword written above each card).

2. FINGER PUPPET FUN

WHAT YOU NEED:

Christmas Nativity Finger Puppets Printable -  one for each child or take turns

Or here's another NATIVITY DISPLAY option

HOW TO USE:

Cut out the figures. Add a small rectangle strip to the back and connect the ends together to create a circle for the finger to slip through. Give one to each child - make enough for each child or have just a couple sets and have the kids switch after each song or verse. Let the kids walk their fingers to the beat of the song on their palm, in the air, or on other places on the body (lap, head, shoulder, etc.) with the finger puppet.

3. PASS THE PRESENT & CHOOSE

WHAT YOU NEED:

Different gift bags or small boxes wrapped in wrapping paper with a line of text from

the song or clue for the song on each paper.**

Small December toy (Santa, snowman, Jesus) or small wrapped present box

** You can use the mad gab song titles as clues and have the kids figure out the title from that (see Idea #8 below).

HOW TO USE:

Start by singing a song and have the children pass the toy or small present around the room as they sing. At the end of the song, whichever child has the toy/present gets to come up and choose a present to open, opens it and reveals the clue to the next Christmas song to sing!

Ex clue: This song talks about a brave prophet who stood on a wall and cried repentance to the people. [Helaman 14:2 – 13, Samuel the Lamanite on the Wall – Samuel Tells of the Baby Jesus]

4. BUILD A CHRISTMAS TREE

WHAT YOU NEED:

Large Christmas Tree Cut-out & paper decorations

HOW TO USE:

Option 1: Put a song and a coordinating scripture along with the page number on each.

Call a child to choose a piece then read the scripture and sing the song, then put the piece up on the board. Continue till all pieces have been used and the Christmas tree is complete.

Option 2: Let the kids build the tree throughout the entire class, with the goal to finish the entire tree before singing time ends. Call on students who are behaving and singing good at random times throughout the singing time to come up and add a piece to the board.

5. DECORATE THE MUSIC LEADER

[Picture thanks to Jenny C. Raybould]

WHAT YOU NEED:

Lots of stick-on bows*

Shiny thin ribbon*

or

LED light up bows

HOW TO USE:

Throughout the class, choose kids (or let class teachers choose kids) to come up and "decorate the chorister" with self-adhesive bows are ribbon.

And for an even more fun touch that the kids will absolutely go crazy for, get the LED light up bows and have the kids work to sing one song with the lights off and the bow lights ON!!

[Note-cards have been made long and skinny for easier grabbing and jar placement].

8. CHRISTMAS MAD GAB

WHAT YOU NEED:

Mad Gabs for Christmas Songs - see list below

Write the titles on the board and have the kids try and figure out what the title is. Once they figure out one title, sing the song. [Note: I would have a list of all the songs off to the side, horizontally,

on the board the kids could refer to].

[List of mad gabs thanks to Jenny C. Rybould]

Jingle Bells - Chin gulp ells

9. CHRISTMAS SINGO - Bingo Christmas Singing Version

WHAT YOU NEED:

Christmas Singo Cards (for each child) - go here for more information and free printable

10. CHRISTMAS TIC TAC TOE

Instead of Xs and Os, use Christmas Trees and Bells.

When a child chooses a spot in which to take a turn, they have to answer a question about your chosen song or questions about the birth of the Savior, in order to earn the spot on the tic tac toe board. If I was not reviewing a song, I would have the questions be about the birth of the Savior. If the child gets the question right, they earn the spot, and everyone sings a song. If they get the question wrong, they don't get the spot and give the other team a chance to answer.

11. CANDY CAN LEADING

WHAT YOU NEED:

Candy cane for each of the kids

HOW TO USE:

Let the children lead the closing song with a Candy Cane! Teach them the "time" of that song and all lead together!

12. BUILD A GINGERBREAD HOUSE

[Idea thanks to Sarah Jones]

WHAT YOU NEED:

Graham Crackers

Frosting

Candy for decorating

Note: Only use paired along with song-based activities and not as a stand-alone activity.

HOW TO PLAY:

Last year, last minute, I decided to use leftover graham cracker house making stuff from my family Christmas party to do this with the primary kids. It was a huge hit so we did it again this year! I don't know if anyone would be interested--it would take some prep if you don't already do this every year. But here's how I did it and made it successful in primary.

1. One house (that I put together ahead of time) per primary (senior and junior).

2. I put the house and the loose candy on a big cookie sheet with sides

3. One class comes up at a time and has the length of the song we are singing to decorate a portion of the house

4. Teachers come up with their class and have sole control of the icing in their hands

5. The most reverent and working hard at singing class gets to come up next (for crowd control)

6. In Junior primary, each kid gets to pick only one piece of candy to put on (or it would probably take forever)

7. We sang "could I hold the baby" 5 times

The kids know the rules before we start. I know this wouldn't work with every primary, but it worked out great with ours two years in a row! The kids loved it! And we gave one house to the stake president (he's often in our building) and one house to our bishop.

13. CHIBI-STYLE NATIVITY SET

[Thanks to Pamela F. Opp for posting, made by her daughter]

WHAT YOU NEED:

Nativity Characters printable - in the printables library

HOW TO USE:

Here's one idea: Attach a sticky note on the bottom of the figure with a Christmas Song then

let the kids pick them from a basket to place in a manger setting.

Here are some suggestions:

Baby Jesus: Away in a Manger

Mary: Mary's Lullaby

Joseph: When Joseph Went to Bethlehem

Shepherd: The Shepherd's Carol or Who Is This Child

Angel: Stars Were Gleaming

Kings; Picture a Christmas or The Nativity Story

I also like to use some hymns like Silent Night and It Came Upon a Midnight Clear since they are my favorite. In the past I have used this two weeks in a row since we can't get through all the songs in one week.

ABOUT THE FIGURES:

Takes a bit of cutting and gluing but so cute once finished!

They are approximately 3 inches tall.

Note from Daughter

How to print: Print in Landscape. To make sure size is standard for all pieces dimension should be 5.94 x 7.71 except for the paper with the multi-color pieces for the back of the heads which are printed in portrait and the dimension is 7.71 x 9.97. If you want to make one sheep smaller just shrink the dimensions.

How to make the papercrafts ~https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3Juwz-z1AA this one is pretty good. I use a paintbrush to apply the glue though, and I glue them to a base to make them stand.

I also use hot glue to attach the head to the body, and the body to the base and I made some custom templates for this project, so they might be a little confusing. Message my mom for questions for me if you need. (Fb group post)
