Luke 4:16–32

Jesus Christ is the prophesied Messiah.

If you were asked to describe what Jesus Christ was sent to earth to do, what would you say? By quoting one of Isaiah’s prophecies about the Messiah, the Savior described aspects of His own mission (see Luke 4:18–19; Isaiah 61:1–2). What do you learn about His mission as you read these verses?

What are some ways the Savior invites you to participate in His work?

Luke 4:18–19

Jesus Christ is my Savior.

Luke 4:18–19 describes Jesus’s mission. How can you help the children appreciate what He has done for them?

Read Luke 4:18–19 to the children, and explain what Jesus Christ was sent to earth to do (to teach us how to return to Heavenly Father, to comfort us, and to heal people). Share how He has done these things for you.

Show pictures of Jesus fulfilling His mission (see Gospel Art Book). Ask the children to describe what Jesus is doing in each picture. Also show pictures of people trying to be like Jesus (you might find some in Church magazines).

I Can Choose The Right As Jesus Did

Tell the story of Jesus’s temptations from Matthew 4:1–11. (See also “Chapter 11: Jesus Is Tempted,” in New Testament Stories, 30–31, or the corresponding video on ChurchofJesusChrist.org.) At appropriate points in the story, ask, “What do you think Jesus should do?”

Display a picture of Jesus Christ, and then describe choices a young child might make. Ask the children to take a step toward the picture each time you describe a good choice. Ask them to take a step away from it each time you describe a bad choice.

DARE TO DO RIGHT CARD GAME makes it easy because it gives real-life situations and the kids step forward or back depending on the choices made.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT & THE WISE AND FOOLISH MAN (WISE MAN BUILD HIS HOUSE UPON THE ROCK) FOLDER GAMES are also simple, fun activity additions that go along perfectly with the church suggested stepping activity above. Kids can choose cards with certain right and wrong actions on them, step accordingly and add them to the folder. These folder games also allow you to add music to your lesson in a way that engages the kids not only with the lyrics, but to the actual lesson content, doubly reinforcing both while allowing children to learn through a variety of ways (i.e. tactile, physical movement, visual, aural), which helps kids relate and remember the lessons better.

Fisher's of Men

There are many ways children can follow the Savior and be “fishers of men” (Matthew 4:19).

How will you help them see the good influence they can be on others?

This simple, engaging folder game gives kids different objects that give light, along with ways they can shine their light for others, as well as ways to share the gospel written on each scripture.

Pack the Missionaries - Missionary Now

WHAT YOU NEED:

Pack the Missionaries - Missionary Now

The object of the activity is to get the missionaries packed while teaching the kids about how they can be missionaries now!

Ask the kids what they know about missionaries and who can be a missionary (i.e. full-time vs every-member-a-missionary). Have the kids choose an item to pack, read the scenario on the back and share what they can do in that situation to be a missionary now.

After each scenario, sing the phrase “I’ll do what is right; I’ll follow his light. His truth I will proclaim” from “The Church of Jesus Christ” (Children's Songbook, #77).
