Sharing Bag

Idea Credit: Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Primary Lesson

PREP: Several items that can be shared, such as a ball, a book, and an orange. Place these items in a bag.

HOW TO USE:

Show each item in the bag and discuss it using the following questions:

How many people can enjoy this (name of item) if I use it by myself?

How many people can enjoy it if I share it?

What are ways I could share it?

After you have discussed all the items, ask:

What do you have that you could share with someone else? How could you share it?

Encourage the children to name specific items and tell whom they could share them with and how they could share them. If they haven't already mentioned these things, ask:

How can we share our time?

How can we share our talents?

How can we share the gospel? (see "Pack the Missionary" game below)

I Can Share the Gospel Like...

Scripture Missionary Heroes

WHAT YOU NEED:

Missionary Play Mat Folder Games

Your Missionary Badge

“If you’re not a full-time missionary with a missionary badge pinned on your coat, now is the time to paint one on your heart—painted, as Paul said, ‘not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God.’” (Elder Neil L. Andersen of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, “It’s a Miracle,” Ensign, May 2013, 78).

Whether we are member missionaries, preparing for full-time missionary service, serving a mission, or returning from a mission, we can draw courage and inspiration from these examples.

Pick and choose or do as many as you have time for. Give a brief description of each scripture missionary hero and their missionary service. Have kids repeat the lines below after you talk about each person.

I can be a missionary throughout my life like Paul.

I can show commitment and courage like Peter.

I can show obedience like Enoch & Moses.

I can accept life and love Jesus always like John.

I can share the gospel boldly like John the Baptist.

I can repent and do God's will like Jonah.

I can endure patiently like Ammon (see Alma 26:28–30) and praise

God (Alma 26:12).

I can sacrifice and trust like Abraham.

I can show strong faith like Alma & Amulek (Ether 12:13).

I can be brave like Samuel the Lamanite (Helaman 13:2-4, 16:2-3).

I can be willing to sacrifice all things, even my life, for God.

PAUL

The Apostle Paul was a great missionary sent to the Gentiles. After he was converted to the Church, he spent the remainder of his life preaching the gospel to them. At different times during his mission he was whipped, stoned, and imprisoned. Yet he continued to preach the gospel (see Acts 23:10–12; 26).

PETER

The Apostle Peter faced ridicule, hatred and humiliation and many more threats, but he never denied his testimony of the living God.

Extra Notes: Nothing kept him from fulfilling his mission to raise his voice as a … witness of his Savior, Jesus Christ.”...No otherworldly, haloed saint, Peter was always at the center of action—risking mistakes and suffering criticism and even persecution. He stood at the Lord’s side, missed no opportunity to learn from the Master, defended Him in Gethsemane, and after the crucifixion testified courageously for a third of a century, emulating Jesus in his manner of living and dying. His speeches and letters deserve repeated reading. But Peter’s greatest message is a life of commitment and courage. (full article / peter church character description)

ENOCH

As Enoch journeyed among his people, he heard a voice from heaven commanding him to preach repentance to the people. “When Enoch had heard these words, he bowed himself to the earth, before the Lord, and spake before the Lord, saying: Why is it that I have found favor in thy sight, and am but a lad, and all the people hate me; for I am slow of speech; wherefore am I thy servant?” (see Moses 6:26–31). “And the Lord said unto Enoch: Go forth and do as I have commanded thee. … Open thy mouth, and it shall be filled, and I will give thee utterance. … Behold my Spirit is upon you, wherefore all thy words will I justify; … and thou shalt abide in me, and I in you; therefore walk with me” (Moses 6:32, 34). Enoch went forth as he was commanded, and the Lord blessed him with the ability to teach with power.

JOHN, SON OF ZEBEDEE

After Peter, John is perhaps the best known of Jesus’s original Twelve Apostles. He and his brother, James, were with Peter at some of the most important moments of the Savior’s mortal ministry, and he has been traditionally associated with five different books in the New Testament. John’s example teaches us that our love for Jesus Christ leads us to accept our own calls and challenges in life, no matter how bittersweet they at times may seem.

JOHN THE BAPTIST

When I was thinking about John the Baptist being a missionary, here are some of the characteristics that stood out:

  • John preached with boldness (Matthew 3:1, 2; John 1:29-37).
  • He knew Christ was the focus and not himself (John 1:20-23; John 3:28-30).
  • Sometimes John doubted, but he always trusted Jesus’ direction (Luke 7:19-28).

All good characteristics for a missionary.

Pack the Missionaries - How To Be A Missionary Now

The object of the activity is to get the missionaries packed while teaching the kids about how they can be missionaries now!

Ask the kids what they know about missionaries and who can be a missionary (i.e. full-time vs every-member-a-missionary). Have the kids choose an item to pack, read the scenario on the back and share what they can do in that situation to be a missionary now.

After each scenario, sing the phrase “I’ll do what is right; I’ll follow his light. His truth I will proclaim” from “The Church of Jesus Christ” (Children's Songbook, #77).

Mission Prep

The "I can Prepare for a Mission by..." play mat folder game pages help kids learn about things they can do right now that will help prepare them for (and help them while they are on) a mission.

Kids choose one of the round picture cards, find the corresponding picture on the Key Guide and read, along with the scripture, if one is listed for that item. Also read the corresponding descriptions below.

SERVE OTHERS

Missionaries Have a Companion! Missionaries have a companion that is with them wherever they go. Missionaries can have many different companions over their mission. Missionary companions support each other, teach each other, and help the other choose the right.

What can you do now? Do your best to be a friend to everyone, especially your siblings and parents. Practice patience and listening. Find ways to serve the people around you. What do good friends do?

STUDY & PRAY

Missionaries study and pray every day so they can have the divine help they need to teach and serve others. They study and pray alone and with their companions. They use the scriptures to teach lessons.

What can you do now? Create good habits of gospel study and prayer. Ponder the scriptures and talk about what you learn with your family. Make it a priority to say prayers every morning and every night.

MENTAL PREPARATION

Missionaries Get Rejected. Missionaries get told no all the time. Some people do not want to hear what they have to say. This is hard. But it helps missionaries understand what Christ went through. People rejected Christ. Like Christ, we should still love those who say no or are mean to us.

What can you do now? Pray for strength when difficult times come. Talk with your parents about things you can do to feel better. Try to be kind to those who hurt you.

EXERCISE

Missionaries need a lot of energy to do the work. They also often have to walk and be on their feet a lot. Or sometimes they may not even have a car and have to ride a bike or walk everywhere!

What can you do now? Find a physical activity you enjoy and will help you be healthy and active. Having a healthy body is important for a healthy spirit! What ways do you like to exercise?

BASICS OF SEWING

Shirt buttons fall off, pants tear, things wear out... You don't want to have to buy a whole new shirt because a few buttons fell off, right? Or, maybe you'll be in a place that you can't just get the shirt quickly? Always be prepared is good in terms of small sewing fixes too!!

What can you do now? Before your mission, learning the basics of sewing will help you fix those little flubs and it's not hard to learn or do!

You get the idea... Make up similar descriptions to fit the rest of the mission prep circle pictures.

Shine On

WHAT YOU NEED:

Shine On Folder Game

Print out and use the play mat folder game (see picture below), which talks about ways we can share the Light of Christ with others and how we can magnify the light of Christ in ourselves. Sing together "Shine On" (Children's Songbook, 144) along with the games.

Fishers of Men

The prophet Jeremiah taught that “many fishers” would be sent to help gather Israel

(see Jeremiah 16:15–16).

Cut out the fish. (Don’t forget to cut out the circle.)

Lightly fold the fish to make them easier to catch.

Make a fishing pole. Tie a string to the end of a stick.

Attach a paper clip or piece of wire to the other end of the string.

Bend the paper clip or wire to form a hook.

Now try to catch a fish!

When you do, read the words on the fish to learn how you can help gather Israel.

Witness for Jesus

Teach kids about being a witness for Jesus (and how they can do that) with this fun, bright printable folder game activity!
