1. MISSIONARY FOOTSTEPS GAME

WHAT YOU NEED:

Mission Prep Footsteps Game - available in the "I Want to Be a Missionary Now" bundle

HOW TO PLAY:

Make a path with the footsteps from the back of the room up to the front. Invite a couple students at a time to walk from footstep to footstep as everyone sings, until they reach the "MTC." (You can stop after each phrase and very briefly discuss what picture is on the footstep and how that helps them prepare to be missionaries), or you can just let kids walk on the footsteps as everyone sings, without stopping.

OR, display the footsteps around the room and you move from footstep to footstep. OR, let a couple kids be at each footstep and after each phrase they rotate on to the next footstep. Tell them to notice what is on the footstep as they arrive at each. OR, display the footsteps on the board and move the "missionary figures" from footstep to footstep as the kids sing a phrase (or verse) over and over. (Goal - to get the missionaries to the MTC).

2. PIN THE BADGE ON THE MISSIONARY

[Idea and picture credit: mncrafts.blogspot.com

WHAT YOU NEED:

Missionary poster(s) and missionary badge

HOW TO PLAY:

Players earn missionary tags by doing something (answering a question on how they can be a missionary - see sample idea questions below), singing a verse of a song, etc.). Once all the missionary tags are divided:

1) Have one student holding the name tag start a certain amount of steps away from the missionary. After each song phrase is sung, have the child take one step closer to the missionary (# of steps should be the same as the song). Once the song is done, they should pin the badge on to the missionary.

2) Play as regular Pin the Tail on the Donkey.

Missionary Questions for the Primary Kiddos:

  • Talk about your favorite Church hymn/song.
  • Tell something you can do to help your testimony grow.
  • Give someone a sincere complement.
  • Who is your favorite person from the scriptures? Why?
  • Share what you could write in a BoM to give to a friend.
  • Tell why you appreciate Jesus Christ.
  • Name two ways you can set an example.
  • How could you be a friend to someone who seems to be left out?
  • Name a Church magazine/book you could share with a friend.
  • Repeat and/or explain an article of faith.
  • Name a Church activity you can invite a friend to.
  • Repeat and/or explain your favorite scripture.
  • Name two ways you can be kind to others.
  • Name a Church video you could share with a friend.

3. MISSIONARY STICK FIGURES

WHAT YOU NEED:

Missionary Stick Figures

HOW TO USE:

Move the stick figure up and down to the beat.

Tap the stick figure on different parts of the body to the beat.

4. MISSIONARY MEASLES

WHAT YOU NEED:

Circle stickers

HOW TO PLAY:

Let kids who are singing well come put a "measle" on the missionaries.

5. I HOPE THEY CALL ME...

[Idea and pictures thanks to Cherilee Caldwell Sorensen]

WHAT YOU NEED:

Globe

Missionary doors

(Please be advised on the name tags the church has asked people not to make them and use the church logo - name - in this way). My suggestions- make black name tags with only "ELDER" or "SISTER" on them and nothing else.

HOW TO PLAY:

Call children up in companionships and have them put on Elder or Sister name tags. Then spin the globe and have one of them stop it with a finger to find out where they will be "called" to. Then have the second companion "knock a door," (take a door down). Read the question on the back.

All the “investigator questions” have answers in Primary songs. They had to figure out one that would work for the answer. If the answer is one of the missionary primary songs (I Hope They Call Me on a Mission, I Want to be a Missionary Now, & We’ll Bring the World His Truth), or phrases from one of the songs, sing it.

How can I learn about Jesus Christ?

Why am I here? What is the purpose of life?

Do you have to wait until you are grown to be a missionary?

How do I know God loves me?

My grandpa died. Will I ever see him again?

I heard your church has a prophet? What is a prophet?

Would you like to be a missionary?

What church do you belong to?

Why do I need to get baptized?

What do you do as a missionary?

Does God listen to our prayers?

6. MISSIONARY OSTINATO

WHAT YOU NEED:

Rhythm sticks or other similar rhythm instruments for children

HOW TO PLAY:

Sing through the song with words first then tell the kids to chant with you, "I want to serve, yes!" over and over while they tap what they say with 2 fingers on their palm.

Divide the primary in half and have half of them chant and tap, "I want to serve, yes!" while the other 1/2 sings the song. Repeat and switch.

Hand out rhythm sticks and repeat.

7. RIBBON WANDS

8. SPECIAL ARRANGEMENT VIDEO

This video is so fun and your kiddos will LOVE it! Reward them once the song

is learned with a watch and listen with this cute family-made fun arrangement!

8. DRESS THE MISSIONARY

[Idea and photo credit: Liz Todd]

WHAT YOU NEED:

Adult missionary clothes items (suit jacket, belt, tie, etc.)

(You may also want to items for girls as well).

HOW TO PLAY:

Pick a volunteer and dress him in "missionary clothes" while everyone sings. If the kids get too distracted watching you help the volunteer dress, stop dressing and cup your hands around your ears. Repeat and dress new kids.

Liz shared, "We sang verse 2 about 10 times in a row without anyone losing interest and the singing improved so much! I even told them they have to sing well while I take the jacket etc. off, otherwise the volunteer can't get out of it. It was fun and very motivating for them."

9. TRANSPORTATION DRAWING & MOVEMENT GAME

HOW TO PLAY:

Ask the kids how missionaries get around the world to preach the gospel and how missionaries get around?

Take answers. (Plane, train, boat, in the past-horse, car, bike)

Let several kids come up to the board and each draw a different mode of transportation as everyone sings. Repeat the song a few times to give them time to draw. Repeat and invite more students up to draw as time allows.

Sing the song as you move like one of the items drawn on the board (ex: boat - move hands like ocean waves, plane - arms out and sway back and forth, horse - gallop in place, car - pretend to drive, train/bike - move arms around in circles, etc.)

10. SHARE THE GOSPEL

[Idea credit: Rachel Lautenschlager]

WHAT YOU NEED:

People & Book of Mormon Figures

HOW TO PLAY:

Put pictures of people up on the chalkboard, ranging from kids to adults, young to old - across all ethnicities, genders, and even disabilities. Have a volunteer child, dressed in large adult missionary coat, come up and magnet or tape as many little Book of Mormon's to as many people on the board as possible before the kids got done with the song. At the end of the song, count up how many people learned the gospel from Elder or Sister (child's name).  Emphasize how we can all be missionaries and share the gospel now and not just on missions.

Rachel said, "It was super fun, and SO cute to see our youngest sunbeams with these huge coats on (which provided a challenge because the sleeves kept falling down, making the process of magneting items on the board even harder."

11. MAKE THE MISSIONARY GROW!

[Idea and handout credit: Brad N' Gloria McCann]

WHAT YOU NEED:

Grow a Missionary Figure - in the printables library

Your kiddos will absolutely LOVE these "Grow a Foot or Two" Missionaries!

As the kids learn the song well and sing, make the missionary grow!

Don't let them shrink with lack of participation or soft singing! ;)

Invite children who are singing good to come up and have a turn!

This will be a big hit in Primary for any missionary-related singing times!!
