What is a STORY SONG? (Also known as Song Story or Singing Story)
Why are they effective?
Song Stories have are powerful ways to attach images and emotions from the children’s minds to the song, as well as giving them an opportunity to hear the entire song and give context to the words.
I first heard of song stories in a facebook group I belong to for Primary Music Leaders.
At first I thought, "There just isn't enough time to be telling stories. The kids need to spend the time singing."
However, after learning about song stories a bit more, I was quickly converted to their effectiveness both for introducing a song to the kids and how they help convey the spirit and message of the song.

WHAT ARE SONG STORIES?
Telling a story and singing a song combined into one.
Song stories are stories that integrate primary songs into a story. The phrases of the song are arranged in order and are part of the story.
You tell a line or two then sing part of the song, tell a line or two then sing part of the song. The song should work into the natural story line.
WHY ARE SONG STORIES SO EFFECTIVE?
Song stories are not only a great way to introduce a new primary song, but they also provide a way to more fully present the message and spirit of the song, in a way that is easily relatable to kids.
Song Stories allow the kids to experience the words and melody without being conscious of the process. The words and melody imprint upon the brain through the back door a little at a time.
Song Stories have are powerful ways to attach images and emotions from the children’s minds to the song, as well as gives them opportunity to hear the entire song and give context to the words.
Song Stories are interactive, real life examples that are presented through story and linked to the song. They give children the opportunity to experience and understand the song in a way they otherwise wouldn’t have. They deepen children's emotions and perception of the song. They are a powerful reminder of the gospel messages and teachings within the songs.
