ACTIVE MUSICAL INVOLVEMENT

Song-based activities (meaning activities that focus on some aspect of the song, and not simply just games), are one of the BEST things to help kids develop their bodies and brains, and learn, memorize and REMEMBER the primary songs.

<<Get 100+ rhythmic primary song activities in the RHYTHMS & OSTINATOS BOOK 70% off with purchase of THE BIG BOOK OF PRIMARY SINGING TIME IDEAS>>

NOTE: Remember to use the non-song activities ALONG WITH song-based activities for the most "bang for the buck!"

BUILD-A-FIGURE

As kids sing sections, verses, complete musical actions or goals, or even to words

of the song, they build a figure.

Get build-a-figures IN THE GOLD LIBRARY.

CONDUCTING FIGURES

Figures on sticks are an easy motivator. Let kids conduct or move the stick figures as they sing.

CRESCENDO CROCODILE

Visit the article HERE to learn more.

CRYING MOMS

Print out the Crying Mom poster (IN THE GOLD LIBRARY), laminate, cut out the eyes and grab a squirt bottle. As the kids sing well, make the mom cry "happy tears" by squirting the squirt bottle behind the poster, in the eye slots, to make the mom cry.

Suggestions: Put a towel under the poster to catch the water.

IMPORTANT NOTE: ONLY USE NON-SONG-BASED ACTIVITIES LIKE THIS ONE ALONG WITH MUSICAL, SONG-BASED ACTIVITIES, never as stand-alone-activities because the kids will get a lot more out of singing time and will internalize the music music better.

DRESS UP
From bows, scarves, ties, hats, jewelry, socks, wigs and more, gather all types of things to let the kids add to leaders or teachers as they sing well. What won't they do to dress their teacher so silly! Or theme the dress-up based on the holiday for seasonal fun!

EMOJI SINGING

Hold up emoji faces to reflect the emotions of the song, different ways kids can sing while making those faces, reflect how well the kids are participating and singing, or even letting the kids judge how they are doing (have them hold up a smiley face or sad face).

FILL-IT-UP POSTERS

Get or make a music note, thermometer or other poster where the kids work to "fill up" the poster by the end of singing time. (This was my number one go-to that I used every single day as an elementary music teacher! The kids LOVED it!). Get a thermometer poster and many more in the PRIMARY SINGING TIME STARTER KIT << Learn more >>

HATS, HATS, HATS

Ugly Hat

Silly Hat

BUILD-A-HAT

Stack the hats

Basic Idea: For the class that is singing really well, their teacher gets to wear a hat for a song.

(Funny Variation - Get a very "girly" big hat and the senior kids, especially the boys, will work really hard at singing good so their male teacher has to wear the "girly" hat!)

Build-a-Hat:

--Pile hats on top of each other for good singing.

--Use balloons and let kids build the hat as they accomplish singing time goals. (This idea also works with dress up items instead of hats).

--Use a poster cut-out person, add to board. Cut out several paper hats of different colors and let kids stack the hats on top of each other as they meet singing time goals.

MOM BOWS / TIE DADS

As the kids sing well / complete singing tasks, learn verses/songs, etc. they can add bows to moms hair or raise or lower Dad's tie. Use for Mothers or Father's Day and other times during the year.

PEEK-A-BOO CUP PUPPETS

As kids sing well, the puppets come up out of the cup.

See how to make the cup puppets in the article HERE (external link).

(Same Important Note as crying mom idea above)

POPCORN, GUMBALL OR OTHERS

Fill It Up by singing songs, completing musical tasks, behaving and more. Easy. Fun. Effective.

POSTER PALS

Whether you are adding smiles to BIG BEN, dots to leaders, teachers, or other kids, pulling in or out spagetti, boogers, blowing bubbles or more, kids love motivational posters that do things as they sing well.

REVERENCE METER

Move the meter according to how well behaved the kids are being.

Get this Reverence Meter or make your own.

SONG PUPPETS

[Example Pic/Idea thanks to: Cherilee Sorensen]

"Seed Puppet". When it's "sleeping" you fold your fingers over so that the sleepy eyes are over the awake ones. Then the seed "awakes" to side 1 by just opening your hand.

After the seed has seen "the day is bright", on the phrase "with all your might" I turn the puppet inside out on my hand and show "the flower" side for "push upward to the light". It only takes a few times practicing to get the hang of it. The Jr. Primary was crazy about it! I was a little worried about the Sr. Primary but decided to try it because it's creator, Laurie said even her Sr. Primary liked it. So I did, and while all I got from the older boys was some interest (that's something!), the girls were all saying, "again! again!". 🙂 Success!!!

(Same Important Note as crying mom idea above)

SLEEPY DAD OR MOM ( or Grandma, Grandpa)

Make a poster where the Dad or Mom's eyes can open and close. Tell the kids they should sing "beautifully strong" and learn the words well (or other musical goals) to keep Mom or Dad awake.

SONG DENTIST

Add some SUPER SINGING FUN to your classroom, music class or primary music singing time with this fun TAKE YOUR SONG TO THE DENTIST bulletin board display kit.

(Same Important Note as crying mom idea above)

Note: Totally usable for classroom teachers as well!

Kids will pay attention, sing more intently, sing out more...

AND BEHAVE BETTER!

Mister Toothy Monster is Missing his teeth... Help him not only get his teeth back, but remove those cavities and make his teeth "squeaky clean" as well!

Perfect for Singing Time OR use in classrooms (church or school) to encourage reverence, attention and good behavior!

WAYS TO SING CARDS

Make Singing Time (or even regular classroom time, or speech practice) at school, church, or home loads of fun with ways to sing cards. From singing the song like a certain animal or character, to adding a movement, standing a certain way and more, your kiddos will have tons of fun!
