What is a Squiggle Map?

A diagram* that follows the words of a song using beat and rhythm patterns in a more free way than a melody map (which is note-by-note).

How to Make?

*You can make different kinds of maps:

-dot

-blocked graphs

-melody maps (note-by-note)

-song maps (shapes and lines representing general aspects of the song

including beats, rhythms and phrases)

For a MELODY MAP?

-What is the the melody range (how many notes from lowest to highest)?

-How many notes in a phrase are there?

-What are special words from the song that can be represented visually?

For additional details on this, check out this blog article.

For a MELODY MAP:

Take the notes of the melody and draw the contour of the melody, typically one phrase per page. You can use dots for notes, symbols, and lines connecting them.

For a SQUIGGLE MAP: These patterns are more free. Make tracing patterns (using lines and symbols) on the pages using a combination of beat, rhythm, and sections of a phrase (usually one phrase per page).

-You can also do phrases by color, if you choose. Here's an example one person made for "Joy to the World."

Use different colors and symbols to represent different words.

Label each page with the title of the song and the number, ex: I am a Child of God (1 of 6).

Get additional instructions and a free melody map for "As a Child of God" here.

Why Use Melody & Squiggle Maps?

  • Really Engages the Kids: They really concentrate as they try and figure out the order, symbol meanings, etc.

  • Helps Kids Learn Faster:

-Reinforces the directionality and shape of the melody and

      where the words fit in.

     -Connects the visual and auditory.

  • It's fun for the kids and can use in several ways:

      -Put in order

-Figure out the colors and symbols

-Sing in Heads certain colors/symbols and vice versa.

Ideas for Using

Display on the board.

Sing the song and have the kids look at the maps and ask them to see if they can figure out what they have to do with the song.

Ask them:

  • What do you see?
  • What do you notice?

As they notice the symbols or colors, ask them while you sing again, to see if they can figure out what words go with what symbols or colors.

  • What is the same?
  • What is different?

Other Ideas

  • Put the pages out of order and have the kids put the pages in order.
  • Have the kids sing all the words except certain keywords/symbols (you sing those) and vice versa.
  • Have the kids do actions for each of the keywords/symbol words as you sing.
  • Have the kids inner-sing (in their heads) the keywords and sing the rest out loud as they do the actions to the keywords and vice versa.
  • Add a sound or movement for each of the keywords/symbols and as you sing, substitute those sounds/movements for the keywords.
  • Let different kids come touch the maps as everyone sings.
  • Add keywords on to post it notes and give to different kids. Let them come add the post it notes to the map in the correct places.
