You can download and print the turkey and feathers by logging in (or registering if you aren't a member yet) to the printables library below. Print the turkey on white card stock, color and laminate.  Print enough feathers for each primary child to have one feather. Print on red, orange, yellow and brown construction paper.

I recommend these packs of construction paper from Amazon (affiliate links):

Before Primary, hang the turkey on the chalkboard.

At the beginning of singing time, pass out a feather and a pencil/pen to all the kids and have them write down something they are thankful or “glad” for (teachers & presidency can help the little kids).

Then call up 4 kids at a time and have them tell the primary what they wrote down. Fit what they are thankful for into the blank spots of the song. It's fun to try to get whatever they are thankful for to “jive” with the tune! Once finished, they can put their feather on the turkey (with masking tape) and sit down. Get 4 more kids and repeat until the whole primary has had a turn.

NOTE: For large primaries, do this by class, partners, or small groups. For small primaries, give each child a few feathers. (Feel free to modify the feathers any way you like...Write individual songs or lines of songs on the back, kids can come pick a feather, sing the song/line and place it on the turkey, etc.

THANKFUL DRAWINGS

WHAT YOU NEED:

  • Thankful Things printable - in the printables library under "I am glad for many things song visuals" - (login/register at the bottom of the page)
  • Chalk or Dry Erase Markers

HOW TO PLAY:

Option 1: Kids draw on the board something they are thankful for.

Invite a few children up to the board as everyone sings the original verse (repeat the song a few times to give the kids time to draw their pictures). Input each of the things the kids drew on the board into the verse (ex: "I am glad for my friends, for my friends, for my friends..." or "I am glad for nintendo, nintendo, nintendo...").

Option 2: Draw rectangles on the board as everyone sings the original words ("I am glad for many things...") of the song. Tell the kids you bet they have many things they are glad for. Put all the paper pictures face-down on a table (or just hold face down) and invite a child to pull out one of the pictures. Then put that picture up in the first rectangle on the board. Everyone sings about that picture. Repeat until you've sung about all the pictures.

Ex: I am glad for MOM & DAD,                    Ex: I am glad for Health & Strength,

Mom & Dad,                                                Health and Strength,

Mom & Dad.                                                            Health and Strength,

I am glad for Mom & DAD,                              I am glad for Health and Strength,

I give thanks today.                                    I give thanks today.

Option 3, MATCHING:

Make 2 copies of each visual and place face down on the board. Invite one child at a time to come up and choose 2 pictures and turn over to see if they are a match, as everyone sings the song (original words) or another Thanksgiving-related song. Once a match is made, add in the words for that thing (see example words above). Repeat process until all matches have been found.

PUMPKIN PASS

[Idea thanks to Sharon Bastings]

WHAT YOU NEED:

2-4 fake small pumpkins

HOW TO PLAY:

Pass around 2 pumpkins hot potato style while everyone sings the song. Whoever is holding the pumpkin at the end names something they are thankful for. After singing the song a couple times, add 2 more pumpkins so you have 4 being passed around. This was a hit with both junior and senior primary.
