ENGAGING PRIMARY SINGING TIME IDEAS FOR LDS PRIMARY SONG, "JESUS ONCE WAS A LITTLE CHILD"

1. MIRROR THE SAVIOR

Kids mirror your actions as you sing.

Tell the kids that they are going to pretend to be mirrors and should mimic all the movements you do. Demonstrate simple actions and have the kids all copy you as everyone sings.

Tell the kids that the Savior invites us to follow Him. We want to be like Him as much as we can, just like our mirror reflection is perfectly like us.

Invite different students up to lead the class in mirroring them as you repeat the song or you can pair kids with each other.

2. CLAPPING PATTERNS

Option 1: Patsch (pat your legs) - clap-clap

Change on, "So little children..." to:

Option 2: Lap, clap, shoulders, thumbs

Print out the lap-clap-snap-thumbs cards (in the GOLD LIBRARY) and arrange in a certain order on the board in patterns of 3 (ex: lap - clap - shoulders or thumbs - lap - clap) and repeat that pattern throughout the song.

(Note: Young children can't snap so use something like touching the shoulders instead).

Let a child come up and choose a new pattern and sing the song again with those actions. Repeat as many times as desired or time allows.

Extension: Add in additional movement cards for more variety - get ACTION CARDS in the printables library.

3. Paper Plates & Pencils Rhythm Ensemble

WHAT YOU NEED:

Paper plates and pencils (unsharpened)

Rhythm Symbols sheet - in the GOLD LIBRARY.

Give half the group paper plates and half the group pencils and follow the pattern as outlined below. Let the kids play along as they sing. Switch and repeat.

For Jr. Primary: Simplify to plates and pencils switching off phrase by phrase or similar.

(Write the plate and pencil pattern on the board BEFORE music time begins).

Extension: You can also substitute other instruments for plate and pencil for more variation.

4. Growing Jesus Poster

SEE TALL DAD/SHORT DAD POSTER PRINTABLE (pics below) - in the printables library

Make a giant Jesus as a Boy Poster with legs very long (separate from body).

Make a slit near the bottom of the body and insert the legs into the slit so that you can pull the legs through to make Jesus grow longer as the kids sing really good.

(Note: Don't use as a stand-alone activity. Use along with other appropriate song-based learning activities).

[I don't have a Jesus one made but you can get the idea of what I mean from the missionary. It's the same concept but just have one as Jesus as a Boy instead of a missionary].

5. When Jesus Was A Child

What You Need:

Jesus Once Was A Little Child Folder Game

and this folder game and growing flower craft - let kids grow flower as they sing

Let kids come up and match the circles with the text as singing.

This fun folder game let's kids learn more about Jesus as a child and the types of food that were available in that area and at that time, plus they get to sing about it all as well to the LDS Primary Song, "Jesus Once Was A Little Child."

A simple, fun engaging way to teach children more about Jesus and how we can be like Him.

You can also use the THIS page from the Friend with facts about Jesus.

How to Use in Singing Time:

After singing each song phrase, read one of the circles.
