MOTHER'S PURSE

[Idea & image credit thanks to theprimarypad]

WHAT YOU NEED:

Purse

List of Items to go in purse (see picture)

Tag Printables (free HERE)

HOW TO USE:

Find the items on the list, print the tags, if desired, and place in a purse or bag. Select a primary song, verse, or even keywords from songs, to go with each item. Have a child pick an item from the purse. Read why the item relates to mom then sing the song along with your song-based music activities for that song.

MOTHER/FATHER KNOWNS BEST

WHAT YOU NEED:

Mother/Father Faces Printable

HOW TO USE:

Add some balloons with the names of songs in the balloons, blow up just a bit and place one balloon on each face poster (as the NOSE on each face). Then let students pop and sing the corresponding songs!

You can also put descriptions of HOW to sing in the balloons instead of songs.

Dad Examples (substitute "Mom" for Dad for Mother's version):

*Dad voice

*Hiking dad (march)

*Flexing dad (flex as sing or do yoga pose)

*Napping dad (lights off and whisper)

*BBQ dad (flip between sides of the room)

*Hammering (stacatto)

*Working out (squats to change volume)

OR,

KEYWORDS IN BALLOONS

Put a paper with a different keyword on each in each balloon. The kids have to figure out which phrase from the song the keyword belongs then sing it.

Extension Game: After all the balloons have been popped and the keyword song phrases have been sung, have the kids put the keywords in order up on the board then sing the entire song again.

NOTE: You can do keywords for more than one verse or a couple songs. If you use keywords from more than one song, I'd separate the balloons out into songs so you can do one song at a time.

Kids LOVE it!

Note: Pair with song-based music activities and don't just use as a stand-alone activity.

SLEEPY MOM/DAD - KEEPING MOM/DAD AWAKE

[Idea & photo collage thanks to Virginia Richins]

WHAT YOU NEED:

Sleepy Moms/Dads Posters

HOW TO USE:

The kids need to sing good to keep Mom/Dad awake...

Great for getting kids to sing louder... Oh, no! Mom & Dad are falling asleep because you are singing so soft! Sing beautifully strong!

  • Cut out the ties
  • Write the songs your kids are learning on the back of the ties
  • Hang the dad and ties on the wall (or for a fun twist, hide the ties around the room)

TIE RISE /LOTS OF HAIR BOWS

WHAT YOU NEED:

Mother/Fathers Posters and Bows posters - in Gold Library

HOW TO USE:

As the kids sing well / complete singing tasks, learn verses/songs, etc. they can add bows to moms hair or raise Dad's tie. Use for Mothers or Father's Day or any other time of the year to motivate students to learn, participate and sing well!

GUESS THE DAD

[Idea & Photo credit: Linda H. Schlauder]

WHAT YOU NEED:

Bag faces for each Dad

Sheets to wrap around each Dad to disguise their clothes

[ADAPT THIS IDEA FOR MOTHER'S DAY/MOMS TOO!]

HOW TO PLAY:

Invite several "Dad's" into the room and have them wear sheet and bag mask.

For each singing task (can literally be any singing task-ex: sing the phrase of the song, guess this symbol in the melody map, etc.), let the kids try and guess who one of the disguised Dads is...

After completing the singing task, let the Dad say or sing the first phrase of the song you were just working on. Then let the kids try and guess. Give them up to 3 guesses and then go on to the next singing activity (i.e. sing the next phrase of the song, this time inner sing these words while I point to the melody map, etc.), whether they guess correctly or not.

Depending on how many singing time activities and verse/song repeats you plan, let the Dad "reveals" happen so that the last Dad is revealed on the final singing time activity for the day. Or you can have the Dad's all revealed after one song and just have them participate in the rest of class without the bags and sheets on! ;)  Do what will work best for you based on your song lesson needs.

DECORATING DAD

[Idea and photo credit to Leslie Lancaster]

WHAT YOU NEED:

Items to "decorate" Dad (i.e. hat's, ties, glasses, stickers, etc.)

HOW TO USE:

I asked dads in the ward to come sit in the front. I hung up ties and the kids picked a tie with a review song on the back. If the kids sang the song well, their teacher would pick them to come up and “decorate a dad”. I had all sorts of goodies to decorate with, including stickers. The kids have never sang so well for me before and they loved decorating the dads! Then at the end we had the dads do “Head Shoulders Knees & Toes” with the primary! It was a big hit!

Hope anyone finds this helpful as they plan for next year or really any holiday. It was great! 🤗

MOTHER FIGURE & SONG QUESTIONS

WHAT YOU NEED:

Mother Figure

Song Questions pages

DAD JOKES REVIEW GAME DAY

WHAT YOU NEED:

Moustache for each teacher and child to wear

NOTE: To incorporate actual guest "Dad's," invite several Dad's to primary. Let each Dad tell one of the jokes then "lead" for that activity (with the help of the primary music leader). ;)

HOW TO PLAY:

On Father's Day, we sang in sacrament so I thought I'd give the kids a silly review game after their hard work! We played "I Mustache You a Question" combined with dad jokes. I took a lot of the dad jokes that have been posted over the years and generally lined them up with some of the songs for this year. Some aren't an exact match, but it's good enough for me. 🙂 I ordered enough sticky mustaches from amazon so every child (and teachers!) can wear one if they want even if they aren't chosen to come up front and pick a funny face paper plate.
