Key Doctrines, Principles & Concepts

  • To enter the kingdom of God, we must obey our Heavenly Father and repent of our sins rather than only saying or pretending that we obey Him (see Matthew 21:28–32).
  • To enter the kingdom of God, we must serve.
  • To enter the kingdom of God, we must not judge unrighteously (as the publicans did).

Parable of Two Sons File Folder Craft

This super simple, fun kids bible parables craft provides super easy-to-understand visuals and story summary while teaching the kids the lessons of the parable.

Simon Says

Play a game of Simon says. Reinforce the message that to actually play the game, you have to DO what is asked. Similarly, if we want to make it back to God, we can't just say we'll do something, we have to do it.

Hearer or Doer?

WHAT YOU NEED:

Marriage of King's Son/Wedding Feast Play Mat Folder Game

HOW TO USE:

Cut out the hearer and doer circle cards. As you read each situation on the play mat page, let your child place a "hearer" or "doer" card over it. Read James 1:22 and Matt 7:21-23. Ask your kids if they (or you) have any situations in your life similar to the ones you are reading and discuss how you can become a better "doer of the word."

Questions to Ask:

  • Which of the sons do you most resemble?
  • What is a choice you had to make recently?
  • Did you make the right choice?
  • How can you remind yourself to continue making the right choices and obeying God and serving others?

What's My "Crime?"

Engage your whole family in interactive fun as you learn about the Parable of the Two Sons and the lessons it teaches!

WHAT YOU NEED:

HOW TO USE:

WHAT THE PARABLE OF THE TWO SONS TEACHES US:

  • We don’t always understand why people do things and things aren't always as they seem.
  • Try to understand rather than judge.
  • Gossip and rumors are often untrue. Don't spread and don't judge; find the truth.
  • We often judge far too quickly, forgetting our own fault. Don't judge, fix yourself first.
  • Don't say yes then not do what you say you will do.
  • Don't reject service .

JUDGING

Using the Judging folder game, go through each example on each handcuff and discuss.

The Pharisees thought of themselves as very righteous but then they sat judging others. Some people judge, reject or exclude others while themselves refusing to submit to God. The Parable of the Two Sons shows us that anyone can reform and become a disciple, and that unrighteous judgment is a slippery slope.

(See Matthew 7:1-3, 5; John 7:24)

In the situation, how did the person judge unrighteously? Are there any ways we've done something similar? How can we stop judging unrighteously? Have more compassion, be more forgiving, more generous in our thoughts towards others. ("Be kind. Everyone is fighting a hard battle.")

REJECTING SERVICE

Using the Serving play mat folder game, go through each example and discuss.

One on said no but then went and the other rejected service by saying yes and not going.

How do we do we reject service in our lives?

How can we stop rejecting and do more serving?

When we profess Christ but reject service and obedience, this displays the veneer of religion without the corresponding quiet labor of discipleship. This allows the precious fruit of God’s vineyard to ripen and fall rotten to the ground. The master of the vineyard needs those willing to harvest, whether in missionary efforts, rescue efforts or simply being-a-better friend, parent, grandparent...efforts. God needs "doers of the word, and not hearers only" (James 1:22).

For young children

Principle: We should serve others.

Catch Phrase:  "I can serve others."

Activity: Have kids color and cut out the service cards, put in a bowl, choose one and then say, "I can serve by..."

  • "I can serve by playing nicely with my siblings."

(Sometimes kids get annoyed by their younger siblings and just want to play alone...)

  • "I can serve by helping clean up my toys."
  • "I can serve by helping clean up my food."
  • "I can serve by taking food to someone in need."
  • "I can serve by sharing."
  • "I  can serve by listening & loving."

Family Game Extension (with kids b&w and folder game color cards): Put all the cards in a bowl. Someone draws a card and silently acts out the card as the rest guess what they are doing. If you draw a card that has a scripture, have someone read the scripture as the person acts it out and everyone guesses. Then add the card to the serving page.

SHARE STORIES ABOUT SERVICE-OR LACK OF SERVICE:

Ex. Story: Sarah accepted a call to be on the primary activity days committee. Angie and Brent were also on the committee. Sarah faithfully served, being responsible, giving and kind, and doing her part. Angie and Brent however, said yes but rarely helped plan or even came to the activities with the kids, leaving Sarah to do most of the work.  When we accept church callings then don't do our part, we are like the son who said he'd go but then didn't.

Principle: We should do what we say we'll do.

Kids Catch-Phrase: "I will do what I said I'll do."

Activity: Have kids name things they have to do or need to do (ex: clean up toys, eat dinner, not throw fits, do homework without being bugged to do it, take out the trash, etc.). Vary the situations based on your kids ages. Then discuss. Let younger kids sing along with the video then name additional things they will do and practice saying, "I will (thing). I will do what I said I'll do!" then sing the chorus from Nephi's Courage : "I will go, I will do, the things the Lord commands. I know the Lord provides a way. He wants me to obey."
