Who Is My Neighbor?

WHAT YOU NEED:

Who is My Neighbor Play Mat Game (available in the Good Samaritan bundle or Parables Mega Bundle)

HOW TO USE:

Let kids place the hearts on the play mat page to discover all the people who are our "neighbors."

Place a piece of candy on each heart. Then let a child draw a heart, read it, and place it on one of the hearts with candy, take the candy and eat it. Discuss. Give each child a turn and continue until all the hearts have been placed.

Anyone in need is our neighbor.

“We need to remember that though we make our friends, God has made our neighbors—everywhere. Love should have no boundary. … Christ said, ‘For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?’ (Matthew 5:46)”

Inactive Members: We can bind up their spiritual wounds by rendering needed service, pouring in the soothing oil of friendship and supplying the soul-healing balm of genuine brotherly and sisterly love (more in the Latter-Day Samaritan article HERE).

Latter Day Samaritan: My Hands are the Lord's Hands

"The Lord does notice us, and he watches over us. But it is usually through another person that he meets our needs." (President Kimball)

"Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me." (Matthew 25:40)

Let the kids trace and color the scripture pages - Matthew 25:40 (click pic below to go right to pdf),

and Leviticus 19:18 available in The Good Samaritan bundle or Parables Mega Bundle

Fill out the LOVE OUR NEIGHBOR AS OURSELVES (older kids can fill out themselves and parents can ask younger kids and write-in for them).

WATCH THE WOULD YOU HELP AN ELDER AND LOST CHILD VIDEO (or other similar videos)-see videos below- and The Good Samaritan "My Hands are the Lords Hands" song video.

Would you be one that passes by or would you help? In what situations have you or do you just pass by? (i.e. see kids making fun of another kid, see kid alone and sad at recess, see kid who feel and skinned their knee who is hurt and crying, etc.)

Let kids make the Good Samaritan flipbook (gives seven different situations and prompt asks, "I can be a good Samaritan by..." Flip each situation tab up and have kids write/draw how they would respond in each situation.

And place band aids (ways to be a good Samaritan) on the play mat folder game pages.

NOTES

The Jews felt that they were better than the Samaritans. They disliked the Samaritans so much that when Jews traveled from Jerusalem to Galilee, they would take the longer way through the Jordan Valley rather than travel through Samaria. Samaritans were seen as outsiders.

The road between Jerusalem and Jericho was only about 17 miles long but was notoriously dangerous for travelers—even into the mid-19th century A.D. It twisted and turned through rocky, cave-filled terrain as it descended 3,300 feet. Bandits could find numerous hiding places in which to wait for travelers.

What reasons do you those that passed by might have given for not helping? (They may have said that their churchlike responsibilities were more important than helping; they might have been afraid that the robbers would come back; they might not have had enough money to get medical help for the man; etc.) Is there any reason that would have been an acceptable excuse to the Lord for not helping? What excuses do we make for not helping?
