TOPICS

Joseph Smith—Matthew 1:31

Before Jesus comes again, the gospel will be preached in all the world.

One sign that Jesus will return soon is that His gospel is being preached throughout the world. The children can help fulfill this prophecy by sharing the gospel.

YOUNGER PRIMARY

* Show a map, globe, or picture of the earth (see Gospel Art Book, no. 3) and help the children say, “This Gospel … shall be preached in all the world” (Joseph Smith—Matthew 1:31). Why does God want all of His children to hear His gospel?

* Invite the children to march in place as you sing together a song about sharing the gospel, such as “I Want to Be a Missionary Now” or “Called to Serve” (Children’s Songbook, 168, 174).

* Show the video “I’ll Go Where You Want Me to Go” (ChurchofJesusChrist.org). As the children watch, help them count the ways they can share the gospel that they see in the video. What other ways to share the gospel can they think of?

OLDER PRIMARY

* Invite the children to share blessings they have received or will receive because they are members of Christ’s Church. Read together Joseph Smith—Matthew 1:31, and ask the children how they feel the gospel will bless God’s children throughout the world.

* Show the children a map of the world or of your country, and help them identify some places where a family member or friend has preached the gospel on a mission.

* Invite a few children to come prepared to share how their family members or their ancestors were introduced to the gospel.

* Ask each child to write the name of someone he or she can talk to about Jesus Christ or invite to church. Also ask the children to list things they can do to be missionaries now.

OTHER:

* Use the SHINE ON folder game as you teach (give sources of light figures, which include ways we can share our light written on them and scriptures, which include ways we can share the gospel.)

* Use the MISSIONARY FOLDER GAMES BUNDLE (specifically "Pack the Missionaries," which lists situations and asks the kids how they can be a missionary now).

TOPICS

Matthew 25:14–30

I can use the gifts God has given me.

Young children are discovering their gifts and abilities. Help them understand that these gifts and abilities come from Heavenly Father.

* Bring several coins to use as you tell the parable of the talents, Use the Parable of the Talents folder game as you tell the parable found in Matthew 25:14–30 (use the parable puppet figures). You could ask three children to represent the three servants. Explain that in Jesus’s day, talents referred to money, but today talents can mean our gifts and abilities.

* Ask the children to name ways their parents, siblings, teachers, or friends have helped them. What talents do these people have that help them serve others?

* Write a small note to the children telling each of them about the gifts or abilities you notice in them. As you share with each of the children the gifts you see in them, encourage them to improve their gifts and use them to serve others. (Print out and give each child The Parable of the Talents Service Challenge page - picture on the right) to complete at home over the next month.

TOPICS

Matthew 25:31–46

Jesus wants me to serve others.

* Summarize the parable in Matthew 25:34–46. Help the children understand that when we are serving others,

we are serving Jesus.

* Hold up a picture of a child with a picture of Jesus hidden behind it. What can we do to serve this child? Remove the child’s picture and explain that when we serve each other, we are serving Jesus.

* Invite the children to draw pictures of themselves serving others in the ways the Savior describes in Matthew 25:35–36. Ask the other children to guess what they are drawing.

* Invite the children to share experiences when someone has shown Christlike service to them or their families.

OTHER:

* Use the SERVICE play mat activity bundle to teach about service.

Activity: Have kids color and cut out the black and white service cards (and color cards), put in a bowl, choose one (if time allows, read the scriptures listed on the circles and discuss), then say, "I can serve by..."

"I can serve by playing nicely with my siblings."

(Sometimes kids get annoyed by their younger siblings and just want to play alone...)

"I can serve by helping clean up my toys."

"I can serve by helping clean up my food."

"I can serve by taking food to someone in need."

"I can serve by sharing."

"I can serve by listening & loving."

SING after each card (tune: Give, Said the Little Stream)

I'll serve as Jesus served.

Serve, oh, serve! Serve, oh, serve!

I'll serve as Jesus served,

to become more like Him!

Chorus:

Serving, serving, all the day.

Serve-away, oh, serve-away!

Serving, serving, all the day.

Serve, oh, serve-away!

Game Extension: Put all the cards in a bowl. Someone draws a card and silently acts out the card as the rest guess what they are doing. If you draw a card that has a scripture, have someone read the scripture as the person acts it out and everyone guesses. Then add the card to the serving page.

Matt 25:35-36 Matching Game

WHAT YOU NEED:

Matthew 25:35-36 activity bundle

Option 1: Give kids the verse figures and let them match the figures to each other as you read the verses.

Option 2: Let kids each color one of the mobile circles (I'd already have them cut out and taped back-to-back), and build the mobile together in class as you read the verses and discuss.

  • Hungry person - food
  • Thirsty person - drink
  • Stranger - house
  • Naked person - clothes
  • Sick person - visiting
  • Person in prison - visitor to prison

Read Matthew 25:40 Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of  these my brethren,  ye have done it

unto me. Reinforce that when we serve others, we are serving Jesus. Bear testimony of service.

Let the kids take-home the Matthew 25:40 scripture trace & color printable.

TOPICS

Matthew 25:14–46

At the Final Judgment, we will give the Lord an account of our lives.

After the Resurrection, the Lord will judge us based on our obedience to His commandments and acceptance of His atoning sacrifice. The parable of the talents and the parable of the sheep and goats teach us about this Final Judgment.

Matthew 25:1–13

I am responsible for my own conversion to Jesus Christ.

The parable of the ten virgins teaches that we cannot borrow our conversion to the Savior from others. How can you help the children take responsibility for their own conversion?

Preparing for the Second Coming (FAMILY) JS-MATT

Let kids craft and play the card game as you talk about preparing for second coming.

* Invite half of the class to read Matthew 25:14–30 and the other half to read Matthew 25:31–46. Ask the groups to act out the parables for the class. What is the Lord teaching us in these parables? (see below, 3 Parables of Preparation).

*Using the TEN VIRGINS play mat folder game (see picture below, includes a lamp craft - kids have kids read what's written on the drops (how to prepare for 2nd coming and build testimony), name additional things they can do, then add the oil to the craft lamp. SEE 10 VIRGINS POST for info).

FAMILY ADDITION: Hide the drops of oil around your home. You could attach the drops to objects like the scriptures or a picture of the temple. When family members find the drops, you could discuss how these things help us prepare for the Second Coming.

* Invite the children to help you make a list of things to do to prepare for a special visitor. How are these things similar to or different from ways we can spiritually prepare for the Savior’s Second Coming?

* On five strips of paper, write things that cannot be borrowed. On five other strips, write things that can be borrowed. Shuffle the strips, and ask the children to sort them into these two groups. Read together Matthew 25:1–13. Why is it important not to rely on others for our conversion to Jesus Christ?

* Invite the children to read Matthew 25:35–36 in pairs and make a list of things they can do to show their love for Jesus Christ.** (Use the Matt 25:35-36 MATCHING GAME -  kids match the pictures as you read the verse).

**Give each child a sheep-goat printable to fill out (available in the CFM 2023 Kids Activity Book in the printables library). Have the kids write or draw righteous things on the sheep and unrighteous on the goat - see picture below).

3 Parables of Preparation:

Verses 1-13 Ten Virgins: Prepare Spiritually for the Second Coming.

Verses 14-30 Talents: We are accountable to the Lord for what we have done with what He gave us. He will reward us for developing our gifts.

Verses 31-46 Sheep & Goats: The Lord will judge each of us. Those who have faithfully served their fellowman will sit on "his right hand."

In the Savior’s time, sheep and goats typically grazed together, but they were separated at the end of the day. In this parable, the separating of the sheep and goats represents the Judgment that will occur at the Savior’s Coming. The righteous will receive a place at the King’s right (representing a place of honor and power), and the unrighteous will be assigned to the King’s left (representing disfavor). This judgment will largely be based on how well individuals have shown their love for God by caring for others (see Matthew 25:34–46; see also Matthew 22:35–40). As in the two previous parables in Matthew 25, the righteous are prepared because of what they have done, while the unrighteous are unprepared because of what they have neglected to do.

Referring to the parable of the sheep and the goats, Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin testified: “At the final day the Savior will not ask about the nature of our callings. He will not inquire about our material possessions or fame. He will ask if we ministered to the sick, gave food and drink to the hungry, visited those in prison, or gave succor to the weak [see Matthew 25:31–40]. When we reach out to assist the least of Heavenly Father’s children, we do it unto Him [see Matthew 24:40]. That is the essence of the gospel of Jesus Christ” (“The Great Commandment,” Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2007, 30).

Tithing & Fast Offering (FAMILY)

What do these verses teach about how the Savior views our offerings? Show your family how to pay tithing and fast offerings to the Lord. How do these offerings help build God’s kingdom? What are some other ways we can offer “all that [we have]” to the Lord? (Mark 12:44).

USE THE TITHING ACTIVITY BUNDLE:

This bundle includes SIX DIFFERENT TITHING ACTIVITIES that will help engage your kiddos in learning about TITHING, from what tithing is, why we pay tithing, what happens to tithing, the blessings of tithing, and so much more!

Treasure up the word of God. (FAMILY)

What does it mean to treasure up the word of God? How can we do this personally and as a family? How will doing so help us avoid being deceived?

Teach your kiddos how to treasure up the word of God with this one-of-a-kind Scripture Scavenger Hunt will have your kids reading scriptures and finding the next clues while they learn about the power of the scriptures. Each rhyming clue includes a principle on the power of the scriptures while challenging the kids to find the corresponding "scripture scroll." Scripture scrolls contain a scripture that further illustrates the corresponding clue, about the importance and power of the scriptures.
