JESUS WILL HELP ME BURDENS

JESUS GIVES US GOOD GIFTS

PURE IN MIND

AND HEART

FULL OF LIGHT SHARE JESUS LIGHT

TOPICS

Matthew 11:28–30

Jesus will help me as I come unto Him.

Key Concept: Children can feel comfort knowing that Jesus will help them with their burdens when they come to Him.

Read Matthew 11:28–30, and show the picture of yoked oxen. Ask the children to point to the oxen and the yoke. Explain that yoked oxen can pull more weight together than each could separately. How can taking Christ’s yoke upon us make these burdens lighter? Testify that when we feel sad, worried, or scared, we can seek Jesus and He will help us.

SEE HEAVY OBJECTS & LAUNDRY in the TRIALS & ADVERSITY POST

How does Jesus help us do hard things? How does the Savior “give [us] rest”? Share an experience when you felt Jesus help you do something hard, and ask the children to share experiences of their own.

Plus use any of the additional ideas in the TRIALS & ADVERSITY POST to illustrated the lesson topic.

Help the children memorize the fourth article of faith - let the kids put the pieces on the 4th Article of Faith play mat page as you SING THE PRIMARY SONG. Talk with them about how each of the first principles and ordinances of the gospel helps us accept Jesus’s invitation, “Come unto me” (Matthew 11:28).

TOPICS

Luke 11:11–13

Heavenly Father gives us good gifts.

Key Concept: To help kids understand that Heavenly Father loves them and wants to bless them.

Use an object lesson to illustrate the Savior’s teachings in Luke 11:11–13. For example, you could place a stone inside a bread bag or put a picture of a scorpion inside an egg carton. Ask the children to guess what is inside, and then show them. Invite them to replace the stone or picture with a piece of bread or an egg. Read Luke 11:11–13, and share your testimony that Heavenly Father loves us, answers our prayers, and gives us many blessings through His Spirit.

Another object lesson option

Wrap or place in gift bags: a set of scriptures, a picture of Jesus on the cross, a picture of family, etc.

Or one bag with pictures of many of the things God has blessed us with (in the printables library in the CFM 2023 Kids Activity Bundle (Jan - June)

Let kids unwrap (or pull out one picture at a time from the bag and discuss.

Sing together a song about God’s love, such as “My Heavenly Father Loves Me” (Children’s Songbook, 228–29). Make and use the Earth Heart 3D Craft flipbook and let kids either put the booklet together in class together or have it already made and flip through it, or let them flip through it, as you all sing.

What are some of the good gifts that He has given us in the song? What are other good gifts He has given us? Ask the children to draw pictures of blessings from Heavenly Father that they are grateful for.

TOPICS

Matthew 12:1–13

I can keep the Sabbath day holy.

The Sabbath is a day to do good things that bring me closer to God.

The Sabbath is a day of healing and serving.

TOPICS

Luke 11:37–42

Both my actions and my heart must be pure.

Key Concept: The Savior taught that it is not enough to appear righteous to others. Our thoughts, feelings,

and private actions must also be pure.

To illustrate what these verses teach, show the children a cup or other container that is clean on the outside but dirty on the inside. Help them think about what “the outside of the cup” might represent. What does the “inward part” represent? Why is it important to clean both the outside and the inside?

Read together some other scriptures that emphasize righteousness both in our hearts and our actions—for example, Psalm 24:3–5; Matthew 15:7–8; Moroni 7:6–9. Discuss why the Savior wants our hearts and private actions to be spiritually clean.

The heart is what you are, in the secrecy of your thought and feeling, when nobody knows but God. And what you are at the invisible root matters as much to God as what your are at the visible branch. “Man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7).

Clean/Dirty Water Object Lesson

Prepare two bottles or glasses of water beforehand. One is clean; the other has a bunch of dirt in it.

Bring the two bottles out and ask, If I were going to give you a drink, which bottle would you want to drink from?… Why?… What would be so bad about drinking from the dirty one?

Which bottle do you think has the water that is purer?

What do you think that word “pure” means?

For something to be pure, it has to be clean, and it has to be made up of one thing. It can’t have anything else mixed in with it. The dirty water isn’t pure because there’s dirt mixed in with the water. The clean water is pure because there’s nothing else in the water. It’s water only.

Read Matthew 5:8 -- “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God."

The water is pure if there’s only one thing in the water.

Our hearts are pure if there’s only one thing in our hearts. What do you think God wants that one thing in our heart to be? (Him and His righteousness.)

Sometimes, our heart might not be pure, though. Sometimes, we might have hate in our heart. Or anger. Or we might want to do bad things. If we have those feelings in our heart, we should ask God to fill up our heart with His love and hope and forgiveness so that we can get rid of and overcome those things.

Luke 11:33–36

Full of Light

Key Concept: As we follow the Savior, we can become full of light.

Ponder how you might teach your family what it means to be “full of light” (verses 34, 36). Would an object lesson help? (Use SHINE ON folder game and Jesus is the Light of the World Game for activities on light - Jesus is our light and letting our own light shine. See the descriptions to learn more about

Discuss ways to bring the Savior’s light into our lives, our home, and the world. Print out the home and world pages and discuss the things listed and name others. (In the printables library under "How We Can Bring the Light of Christ to Our Homes & World activity pgs" - login/register at bottom of pg.) Let kids write or draw in other things they could do in addition to those listed. (Also see the video “The Light That Shineth in Darkness,” ChurchofJesusChrist.org for additional ideas.)

Over the years we have adopted, as part of our regular family dialogue, that simple, penetrating question: “Do you see any light in that?” We ask this question frequently as we seek after things that are “virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy” (Articles of Faith 1:13) or as we are bombarded with worldly influences. Simply by being on guard and by using this somewhat obvious filter, we have learned that it is quite easy to differentiate between what is light and what is dark—between things that inspire us and bring us closer to the Spirit and things that do not.

As you and I follow the Savior and embrace the light, we become “children of light” (1 Thessalonians 5:5), His sons and His daughters. As we continue on this path, we learn and grow and gain even more light (see D&C 50:24).

We have been given the light of the gospel through the Atonement of Jesus Christ. We know what God expects from us, His beloved children. We have His Spirit to guide and direct us. To become children of light means to reject the power of the adversary and to choose daily to follow the Light of Christ.
