BAPTISM BORN AGAIN

BECAUSE GOD LOVES ME

JESUS IS MY LIVING WATER

HONOR THY MOTHER

Baptism Born Again

John 3:1–10

WHAT YOU NEED:

Repentance Boy & Girl Printable - in the printables library

Dry Erase Marker

Ask the children to talk about what they do to wash their hands. Show the picture Girl Being Baptized (Gospel Art Book, no. 104), and help the children compare washing our hands with water to becoming spiritually clean through baptism.

What role did your baptism and confirmation—being “born of water and of the Spirit” (John 3:5)—play in your being born again? What are you doing to continue this process of change? (see Alma 5:11–14).

Print out the boy and girl. Laminate. Get a dry erase marker and as kids name things that stain our souls, let them make a dot on the person. Talk about how we renew our baptismal covenants every week when we take the sacrament and through repentance we can continually become clean again. Let kids erase the dots with a rag by wiping the kids clean of their spots.

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES:

Baptism Folder Game Bundle - covers essentially all aspects of baptism - learn more about this game bundle and other ideas on teaching baptism in the BAPTISM post.

Because God Loves Me

John 3:16-17

WHAT YOU NEED:

Because God Loves Me coloring page & scripture trace - in CFM Kids Activity Bundle Jan-June - in the printables library

Ask the children to draw a picture of their favorite gift and the person who gave them that gift. Then ask a child to read John 3:16-17. What gift did Heavenly Father give us? How does this gift show His love?

Sing together a song about Jesus, such as “He Sent His Son” (Children’s Songbook, 34–35).

Let the children hold up a picture of Jesus every time they sing a word like “Son,” “Jesus,” or “Savior.”

Sing “God’s Love,” Children’s Songbook, 97.

Have kids repeat, "Because God loves us He gave us Jesus, our Savior."

Ask the kids what they've done when they got a gift they really appreciated? (Sent person a thank-you card, did something nice for them...)

Ask them what they can do to thank Heavenly Father for giving them His son.

Have them write (or you help them write) one way they can show thanks this week to Heavenly Father

for the gift of His son on the coloring page.

The sacrament provides a time to reflect on the love of God and the gift of His Son. What primary songs and hymns help you feel God's love? What could you do to make the sacrament more meaningful?

Grab this S-A-C-R-A-M-E-N-T acronym coloring book and help kids learn about ways they can remember Jesus during the sacrament.

And the My Sabbath Day coloring book - both available in the printables library

Jesus Is My Living Water

John 4:5–23

WHAT YOU NEED:

Ladle spoon with holes in it

Jug of water

Another empty jug

Ask the kids why we need water.

Tell the kids they have 1 minute to get all the water out of one jug and into the empty jug, using the ladle spoon.

Time them for 1 minute and see how far they get.

Ask them why the task was impossible to do. (The spoon had holes in it).

Tell them the spoon with holes is like trying to let temporal things fill us up instead of spiritual things. Invite the children to name things that, like a cup of water, satisfy us for the moment. None of those things will ever help us get the water we really need ("living" water) nor get back to Heavenly Father.

Briefly summarize John 4:5–23.

What things are like “living water” that can satisfy us forever? How is the gospel like water? Testify that Jesus Christ and His gospel give life to our spirits, just as water gives life to our bodies.

The Greatest Gift

WHAT YOU NEED:

6 small gift bags with a paper coupon in each that says:

  • $100,
  • a car,
  • a house,
  • a million dollars,
  • Heavenly Father's Son,
  • Eternal Life.

Ask: Do you like to receive gifts? We all do. Gifts show us that someone cares about us. Knowing that someone cares about us and loves us makes us happy. Ask the kids to share about the best give they have ever been given.

When we love people, we want to give them gifts. Because our Heavenly Father loves us, He gives us many gifts.

Draw lots of different gift boxes on the board. Let kids name different Gifts Heavenly Father has given us. Write each on a gift on the board as the kids name.

Tell the kids you have six gifts here and as they open them, you want them to notice something about them.

Let the kids open each gift in order ($100 - car - house - million dollars) but DON'T LET THEM OPEN THE LAST TWO YET.

Ask the kids what they noticed so far about the gift. (They are getting bigger and bigger).

Ask the kids if they know what the greatest gift in the entire world, for all time is.

Read John 3:16.

Let kids open the present that says, "Heavenly Father's Son."

Ask: Why is this gift greater than any other gift we could ever receive?

How have you felt the love of God through the gift of His Son?

Tell the kids there is one more gift. Say: But I thought that the gift of Heavenly Father's Son was the greatest gift in all the world? What else could be a greater gift than that? Let kids answer.

Tell them that the gift of God's Son is the greatest gift, and it is because of Him this other gift is even possible.

Read D&C 6:13 - “If thou wilt do good, yea, and hold out faithful to the end, thou shalt be saved in the kingdom of God, which is the greatest of all the gifts of God.”

Let kids open the last gift - eternal life.

Remind them that if we live faithfully, someday we will receive the greatest of all the gifts of God—eternal life.

Honor Thy Mother

John 2:1–11

I can honor my mother as Jesus did.

At the wedding in Cana, Mary told Jesus that the wine had run out. According to the Joseph Smith Translation, Jesus responded to His mother by asking, “Woman, what wilt thou have me to do for thee? that will I do” (in John 2:4, footnote a). Jesus is an example of how we should treat our mothers.

Ask the children to list things their mother might need help with. Let them fill out the card below (click picture to go to the pdf).

Sing, "Mother I Love You" primary song and other Mother's Primary Songs while enjoying using the Mother's Song Activity Pack - available in the printables library).

Let kids put together M-O-T-H-E-R flowers crafts (available in the printables library).

and see other possible Mother's Craft Items in the post HERE.

and invite the moms in to class and play "Mother" song (or "Mother I Love You" to go along with the flower crafts they give to their moms.

John 2-4

The spiritual truths of everyday items (FAMILY)

Everyday Items Teach of Jesus Christ

As your family reads these chapters this week, pay special attention to how the Savior used everyday things—birth, wind, water, and food—to teach spiritual truths. What items in your home can you use to teach spiritual truths?

Let the kids color in each item on the Everyday Items Coloring Pages (see picture below) as you talk about how those things teach spiritual  truths (printable available in the CFM 2023 Kids Activity Bundle Jan-June - in the printables library).

BIRTH:

John 3:1–6.

Talk with your family about the miracle of pregnancy and birth—the process of creating a living, intelligent being. Jesus taught that we must be reborn before entering the kingdom of God. Why is rebirth a good metaphor for the change required of us before we can enter the kingdom of God? How can we experience the process of spiritual rebirth?

WATER:

John 4:5–15

What was the Savior teaching us when He compared His gospel to living water? Maybe your family could look at some running water and describe the qualities of water. Why do we need to drink water every day? In what ways is Jesus Christ’s gospel like “a well of water springing up into everlasting life”? (John 4:14).

Shoes - run and not be weary... (Isaiah 40:31)

Bread - bread of life... (John 6:35)

Book - seek diligently out of best books... (D&C 88:118)

Door - I am the door... (John 10:9-10)

Window (let's light in)... (Matthew 6:22-24)

Light (gives light/Jesus light of world)... (John 8:12)

Glove (spirit/body)

Money (give to needy / tithing)

Gold ring (praise of man/worldly vs faith)... (1 Peter 1:7)

Inside tree/plant (Jesus is vine)... (John 15:5)

etc.
