Reverence Challenge

WHAT YOU NEED:

Reverence Challenge Sheet (click to go to pdf)

Teach your kids about reverence as they watch these simple, fun, videos and complete their  reverence challenges.

Have your kids watch one reverence video each day and complete the accompanying reverence challenge, then color in the corresponding reverence box on their Reverence Challenge Page. Once they complete all the reverence videos and challenges, they add their reverence badge to their Reverence Challenge Page.

What is Reverence? Reverence is a Feeling

Let kids go through the Reverence Is A Feeling Video and also include these definitions in your discussion of reverence:

  • Reverence is a special feeling of love and respect for Heavenly Father, Jesus, and their creations, as well as for sacred places.
  • True reverence involves happiness, as well as love, respect, gratitude, thankfulness, and godly fear.
  • A feeling or attitude of deep respect, love, and awe, as for something.
  • Being quiet and still.*

*Activity:

Tell the children you have a secret message for them. However, they have to be able to hear it. Instruct them on the count of three to make as much noise as possible. Then, whisper the message quietly. It can be any phrase or the location of the treat for the night.

Settle everyone down and ask why they weren’t able to hear what you said. Tell them you’ll whisper the message again, but they need to be as quiet as possible. Whisper the message again and everyone should be able to hear you.

Ask: What does this activity teach us about reverence?

Help them think about how being reverent helps others listen. “When you are trying to listen to a story, does it help if others are quiet? What if others are noisy?” Explain that they can help home, church and other special places be reverent, happy places where people listen and learn about Heavenly Father.

What is Reverence? Reverence Is Love

WHAT YOU NEED:

Reverence Is Love Heart Puzzle

Let kids sing Reverence is Love primary song as they put the heart puzzle pieces together.

SEE REVERENCE VIDEO SERIES REVERENCE CHALLENGES (videos coming...)

Reverence Where? When?

Read President Kimball’s definition of reverence: “We must remember that reverence is not a somber, temporary behavior that we adopt on Sunday. True reverence involves happiness, as well as love, respect, gratitude, and godly fear. It is a virtue that should be part of our way of life. In fact, Latter-day Saints should be the most reverent people in all the earth.” (We Should Be a Reverent People, [pamphlet, 1976], p. 4.)

WHAT YOU NEED:

Reverence Folder Game

Have the kids sort the pictures to show where they should be reverent and where they don't necessarily need to be reverent and fill in on the hearts ways to show reverence.

Reverence At Church

WHAT YOU NEED

Reverence is Love Church Puzzle

Sing  “I Want to Be Reverent” (Children’s Songbook, p. 28).

Enjoy saying/singing the poem below and let kids put together the church puzzle as you talk about ways to be reverent at church.

Ask: Whose house is this?

Explain that the meetinghouse belongs to Heavenly Father and Jesus. It is a place where we come to learn about them and what they want us to do.

Enjoy doing these action poems together.

KIDS FOLLOW-ALONG VIDEO COMING...

The Meetinghouse

These are the walls of a house so fine; (put arms up, palms facing each other)

This is the steeple so tall. (bring fingers together touching at top making a triangle).

These are the windows that let in the light (make square with fingers).

And the doors that swing open to all (put palms together, prayer pose then open hands, palms facing you).

This house was built (hands in fists putting one fist on top of the other)

by loving hands (palms up as if asking for something)

As a place to sing and pray (bring hands together in prayer)

Let us fold our arms, bow our heads (fold arms and bow heads),

And give thanks for this house today.

What are some of the things you should do in the meetinghouse?

What are some of the things you should not do in the meetinghouse?

Let kids choose an item from the bag then ask, “What should you do with your (item shown in cutout) to show reverence in Heavenly Father’s house?”

Possible answers:

Mouth—Speak quietly, smile, sing songs, pray, keep closed when someone else is talking.

Eyes—Look at the teacher or speaker, close during the prayer.

Hands and arms—Hold still, raise to answer a question, fold during prayer.

Feet and legs—Walk quietly, hold still.

Ears—Listen to what is being said.

Help the children understand that there are places and times in the meetinghouse for running and playing games, but in most of the building and on Sundays we should be reverent. Point out that besides sitting quietly in Primary and in the chapel, we walk and talk quietly in the halls.

Sing “Two Happy Feet” (Children’s Songbook, p. 270) as the children walk around the room quietly and carefully so their shoes do not make any noise.

Explain that being reverent means doing things that show our love and respect for Heavenly Father and Jesus. We can show our love for them in the following ways (let the children demonstrate some of these as you talk about them):

Walking quietly and talking softly.

Sitting quietly and listening to prayers and lessons.

Raising our hands when we want to say something.

Folding our arms.

Keeping the meetinghouse clean.

Let kids say the poem below together. (Click the picture to go to the pdf).

WATCH THE FOLLOW-ALONG KIDS VIDEO COMING...REVERENCE DISCOVERY TRIP

Whenever my mom takes me to the zoo,

Do you know what I always do?

I like to visit the butterflies—(Link thumbs and flutter fingers.)

A yellow, blue, and white surprise.

I dip my hand in the water—so—(Cup hand and make a dipping motion.)

Then I sit very still till the butterflies know

That it’s safe to float down on their delicate wings (Hold one hand out and flutter the other hand down to it.)

And sip from my hand a butterfly drink.

But if I run or shout or play,

They lift their wings and flutter away. (Link thumbs and flutter upward.)

And when I go to Primary,

I like to see how quiet I can be. (Hold index finger to lips.)

I fold my arms; my feet are still; (Fold arms and point to feet.)

Then I listen and listen and listen until (Cup hand to ear.)

A feeling of peace settles all around (Move hands down from over head, wiggling fingers.)

And a still, small voice without a sound (Cup hand to ear.)

Whispers a truth so sweet and mild:

“Heavenly Father loves you, for you are His child.”

And then my heart just sings and sings, (Place hand over heart.)

As it does at the touch of butterfly wings. (Link thumbs and flutter fingers.)

Little ones need lots of practice being reverent. Set a timer for a minute or two and invite them to listen to soft music or a story about Jesus.

Reverence Action Poems

By Diana Eckersell Janson

I’m always reverent

From my head (hands on head)

To my toes. (touch toes)

When I walk, (walk quietly in place)

I step quietly

As I go.

When I speak,

Words come softly, (put finger to lips)

Not loud and bold. (turn head from side to side)

When I listen, (cup hand to ear)

Lips stay shut (zip lips)

And my arms I fold. (fold arms)

When I pray,

My head bows (bow head)

And my eyes are closed. (close eyes)

I’m always reverent

From my head (hands on head)

To my toes. (touch toes)

Quiet as a flake of snow (reach arms up high and bring them down, fluttering fingers),

Quiet as the flowers grow (make a fist and then slowly open fingers like a budding flower),

Quiet as a butterfly (link thumbs and wave fingers like wings),

Softly, softly passing by.

That’s how quiet I will be (place one hand over heart)

When I come to Primary (fold arms together).

Reverence For Sacred Things

Read to the children from Doctrine and Covenants 63:64: “That which cometh from above is sacred.” The word sacred means holy and special. Heavenly Father wants us to show respect for the sacred things He has given.

Ask the kids to think of an item that is special to them, such as a favorite toy or book. How do they take care of it and protect it? (or show your family a precious family treasure. How do we treat this item differently than other things that aren’t as valuable?) Help them think of things that are special—or sacred—to Heavenly Father. How should we speak of these things? How should we treat them?

Heavenly Father has given us many gifts—like temples, scriptures, our bodies, and our Savior. He wants us to treat and talk about these gifts with respect and reverence. When we do this, we show Heavenly Father we are grateful for the gifts He has given us.

Use the picture Jesus Cleansing the Temple (Gospel Art Book, no. 51) to tell the story in Matthew 21:12–13. How was Moses’s attitude in Exodus 3:1–5 different from the moneychangers’ attitude? Why does the Savior want us to treat sacred things with reverence?

Let kids roll dice and match with the picture then name ways they can treat that thing with reverence - free click picture below to go directly to the pdf.
