The idea is to have a child pick out an item and tell which commandment it represents, and with the Senior Primary, ask what blessings come from keeping that commandment.
Invite a child up to pull something out of the box as you sing. Repeat until all the items have been done.
Things in my Commandment Box:
Picture of Christ with Children - Love the Lord thy God
Hearts - Love thy neighbor as thyself
Tie - Keep the Sabbath Day Holy
Apron - Honor thy Father and Mother
Tithing Envelope - Pay Tithes and Offerings
Bowl - Law of Fast
Fruit - Word of Wisdom
Scriptures - Seek Wisdom
Picture of Temple - Make Covenants
At the end I hope the children will have lots of ideas about why we keep commandments. I hope to emphasize that keeping the commandments invites the Spirit which helps us choose the right and helps us want to keep more commandments.
Cut out each picture and glue to the 10 commandments pages over the corresponding words.
5. SIGN LANGUAGE
My Suggestion: If there are too many actions, simplify. Use just a few actions for the main keyword(s) of parts of phrases instead of actions for every word.
Arrange the lap, clap, snap, thumbs in different orders for each song repeat.
Do the actions as singing. Add a stomp feet into the order for added challenge.
7. OSTINATOS & INSTRUMENTS
WHAT YOU NEED:
Rhythm Instruments for each child
HOW TO PLAY:
*Ostinato Chant - You sing the melody while the kids chant and tap the ostinato (without instruments first then with instruments if time: "Keep the Commandments. Keep the Commandments" to the rhythm TA TITI TA TA - TA TITI TA TA.
(NOTE: Ta-quarter note TiTi-2 eighth notes)
Switch - you chant, they sing.
Divide the class in half. Have 1/2 tap and chant while the other 1/2 sings. Switch.
Sing the words while tapping the ostinato.
Challenge for Older Kids: Add a melody to the ostinato...
[Note: The words are displayed as a guide but the notes go to the ostinato "Keep the Commandments," which is sung over ever two measures through the song].
