1. GIVE POPSICLE STICK FUN

WHAT YOU NEED:

"Give" sticks - print out and attach heart hands to popsicle sticks; enough for each child to have one (available in the Give Said the Little Stream bundle)

8 give hearts (not attached to popsicle sticks)

HOW TO USE:

Have students raise up their "Give" popsicle stick figure every time they sing the word "give." Or, use to trace hearts in the air as singing. Or, use to conduct, tap the beat, and more! Or, put the 8 hand hearts across the board horizontally and invite students up to come and touch each hand heart, to the beat, as singing (see pictures on #5 below).

3. FOREIGN LANGUAGE

[Idea credit Janel primarysinging]

Write or print out foreign language words and country on the board. Sing the word "give" in different languages each time you repeat the verse.

4. GOOD DEEDS FLOWER

[Idea thanks to singingmagic.blogspot.com]

WHAT YOU NEED:

Flower printable - in the printables library and in the Gold Library

HOW TO PLAY:

Ask the kids:

>What are streams like? Are they still and quiet, or do they seem to dance and quietly go on their way? (the stream is "cheerful" ... and "God loveth a cheerful giver")

> How do streams bless the ground around it? (talk about the plants that grow, the animals that drink from it, etc.)

Ask the kids to share examples of how they can give cheerfully. [Either have examples written on each flower petal or have the kids name something then write a keyword with a dry erase marker on the laminated flower pieces) then add to the board.

As everyone sings, build the flower as they volunteer ideas.  (The stream = good works - is feeding the flower.) Call up a child for each phrase of the song to add a piece as they share an example of how they can give cheerfully.

Examples:

>What chores do Mom or Dad have you do that you don't enjoy that you can do cheerfully this week?

>Can you say a prayer in the morning and have a prayer in your heart about having an opportunity to cheerfully give service?

5. UP & DOWN LIKE THE LITTLE STREAM

Starting from a sitting position, tell the kids to stand up and sit down, every time they hear the word "Give." The next time, stand up and sit down on the word "Give", but also clap

on any word that starts with the letter "S". The third time through, stand up and sit down on every word that begins with "G" and clap on the words that begin with "S". You'll may sing a solo as the kids are concentrating so hard...or just following your moves. And watch out, your quad's might be sore the next day!

Variation: Katie Jennings

I made ribbon rings and the kids do “interpretive dance” and make up their own actions to go with the song. They LOVED it.

6. DOING GOOD GIVE SAID THE LITTLE STREAM BOARD GAME

WHAT YOU NEED:

Give Said the Little Stream board game

HOW TO PLAY:

This game is great for reinforcing ways children can do good while allowing for song repetition!

The cards list ways that children can do good. Kids choose cards and place on the circles on the board as they sing. Stop after each phrase and place the card after you read it, then repeat the song and allow different kids to move the boat along the stream as everyone sings each time.

Add this game with Guyand Melissa Jones idea:

I talked to the kids about a stream… explaining that a little water helps so many things- green fields, water for fish and animals, us and small streams can go into larger rivers, etc… I compared it to giving even small things can pass on to bigger, nice, things… I talked about giving to others is like spreading love to others… I had a small red heart stress ball I bought on Amazon, we passed it around from one person to the other as we sang the song. I told them we are spreading love through our whole primary. Kids loved it!!❤️

I also made up a new cheer with the kids…

I say “Give said”

They say “the little stream….. whoosh”

They use their hand to swish like a little stream going down a hill.

They loved it!! 💦

7. FLOWER COLORS

Lindsay Gardiner

I drew a stream on the blackboard with chalk and then taped five unfinished flowers (just stem, leaf and center circle) to on the banks on the stream. We talked about what a stream was and what it “gives” to things around it. We went through the lyrics of the song trying to find what we are supposed to “give” but we couldn’t find anything. Then I told the kids to look under their chairs, where I had put a snack-size baggy with one crayon and a petal to one of the flowers with a word on it. Each word was different, and they were words like “love” “compliments” “peace” “kind words” “money” “creativity” “hope” “prayer” “experience” “time” etc. I did 30 of them, and the sunbeams petals just had smiley faces on theirs.

Their job was to use their crayon to color their petal while I sang the song to them. Then I asked them what word I had sung 10 times in that song (Give). I sang the song again to let them finish coloring, and then I asked all the petals who had a specific color to come up (I had given out red, blue, purple, yellow, pink, orange and green crayons strategically). I asked the kid what word was on their petal and how they could “give” that word. I.e. “How can you give prayer, love, compliments, hope, experience, money, creativity, etc.?”

For sunbeams I just asked them what color they used and what was on their petal (a smiley face). As they answered we built the flowers color by color. I would call two colors, we would talk through the words and build the flowers, and then we would sing the song. Then I would call up another two colors and do it again. The kids loved that they all got to participate (we have a mixed primary).

Once our flowers were built, we looked at all of the ideas we had come up with and I encouraged them to think about the ideas of what we could give as we sang the song one last time together. We talked about how in the song the stream says “I’m small I know, but wherever I go the fields grow greener still” and that we (the kids) we’re not big and tall yet, but even though we are small right now we can still give all of the ideas that we built our flowers out of. We can be streams and make our flowers grow or help those around us.

For another Sunday, repeat the actions but this time add in an egg shakers or maracas.

9. LITTLE STREAM PICTURE DRAWING

[Idea thanks to Tara Porter Blumer]

WHAT YOU NEED:

Chalk or Dry Erase Markers - several colors if possible

HOW TO PLAY:

Set out a variety of colored chalk at the board.

Start with a simple drawing of a stream coming out of some mountains as you sing the song.

Repeat the song and tap some kids to add to the drawing as everyone sings.

Once they add something to the picture at the board, they go and tap other kids to come up and have a turn. Each child adds a little something to the masterpiece -- flowers, grass, rocks, butterflies, fruit trees.

It's so simple, the kids love participating, and you get a lot of repetition in! Win-Win!

10. FLOWER SPRAY / PASS

Stephanie Hall

I brought small spray bottles and a fake flower, they passed the flower as we sang and I went around misting them with water.

VARIATION: GIFT PASS

Rachêl C Zumaya

Get a gift box and put something (small wrapped candies, toy, etc.) in it and have the kids sit in a circle. And then they pass the box on the beat so that it hits certain students when it says give. So they give the box on the word “give“ and continue passing until the song is done. Whoever has the present on the last beat can open it and then give that thing inside the box to everyone in the circle, so that not just one person gets to benefit from the gift.
