Repeat and have the kids stand and sit every time they hear the words, "family history."

Repeat and add an action to the words, "family history."

Repeat and add actions (clap, tap knees, turn around, touch head or toes, etc.) to the major

words of the songs (ex: family history, doing it, love, sweet, stories, write, etc.).

3. FAMILY HISTORY "RAP"

WHAT YOU NEED:

Questions page (see picture)

HOW TO PLAY:

Call out the questions between the phrases of the song then the kids sing the phrase.

Repeat and let another child come up front and call out the questions. (Help them if needed).

[THE KIDS LOVE THIS!!]]

4. PROGENITORS SUPRISE

[Idea thanks to Kristen V. Larsen]

WHAT YOU NEED:

Pictures of ancestors

Sheet

HOW TO PLAY:

Have a framed collection of ancestors on an easel underneath a sheet. Tell the kids you have a surprise under the sheet and then explain the word "progenitors". Say the word a few times. Tell the kids under the sheet are pictures of you and you progenitors, or your ancestors (past family members). Sing the song and tell the kids to raise their hand when they hear the word "progenitors". After, unveiled the photos. Repeat and tell the kids when they hear the word "progenitors" in the song to touch their nose or head.

3-5. SONG MOVEMENT GAMES (hand, cup, eggs)

*SONG ACTIONS

Pat, Clap, Thumbs over the Shoulder to the beat.

Family  history----------------

I am      doing it---------------

*CUP ACTIONS

[Sharla Dance - primarysingingtime]

Pat, clap, clap  (see video below STARTING AT 5:36)

Take the cup in one hand with the top down (bottom of the cup at the top) and then pat the cup on your lap and then tap the cup with your other hand.

              pat-tap-tap   pat-tap-tap   pat-tap-tap pat-FREEZE and switch hands.

Family history, I am doing it.     My  family  his-to-ry.

Continue the pattern for the rest of the song.

*EGG SHAKERS

Pattern: Shake, pat, pat

               family  history

(Pat on different places on the body as repeating the movement pattern).

For older kids, start the first time with a shake but then change hands on each "shake" for the rest of the verse.

CHALLENGE: with Partners

Pattern: shake-pat partners egg-pat, change hands-pat-pat, change hands-pat-pat, etc.

SUPER CHALLENGE: throw egg up in air instead of changing hands (shake the very first time) then bring hands together into a clap (while holding egg):

Throw-pat-pat, throw-pat-pat

NOTE: Only do this version once the kids know the verses fairly well.

6. FAMILY HISTORY BUILD-A-TREE

WHAT YOU NEED

Family History Tree & Family People Circles

HOW TO PLAY

Tell the children that we all have a very important tree and it's not an apple tree, or a shade tree or a Christmas tree. Show the kids the tree poster and the empty circles and read the names under each. Ask the kids to listen to the song to see if they can figure out what kind of tree it is.

Sing the song then take the kids answers. Briefly explain about family history (i.e. “Family history” is the written stories and records of the family who lived before you). Tell the kids that as you sing, the kids should look under their chairs to see if they have a circle card under their seats (or you can just pick a child that is singing well and come up and have them choose one of the circles to place on the tree). Then repeat the song and have the kids echo each phrase. Say "stop" after each phrase then name one of the circles on the tree and have whichever child has that card come and add it to the tree. Continue this until you've added all of the circles to the tree. Then repeat the song again with the kids singing along.

7. FAMILY HISTORY TREE LEAVES

WHAT YOU NEED:

  • Leaf cut outs - enough for each child to have one (FREE pattern in the printables library - login/register at bottom of the page)
  • 1 Ancestor name and fact on each leaf from the Primary Kids families - Get in touch with each of the kids parents and asked for the name of one ancestor and one cool fact or story about that ancestor.
  • Tape
  • Or instead of a tree, make a giant turkey and the feathers are the leaves and add the feathers to the turkey.

PREP:

Draw a giant tree outline on the board.

Add many pieces of tape on the side of the board.

Bowl of the leaves

OR

Cut out a giant turkey and individual feathers and use the same way as the leaves but add the feathers to the turkey.

 HOW TO PLAY:

In between each phrase, draw a leaf (or let a child draw a leaf) read the fact, then have the kids guess if it is their ancestor. Let the child whose ancestor it is come up and add the leaf to the tree on the board. Do 2-3 names per song phrase (or just one per song phrase and repeat the song lots. Repeat for the 2nd verse if you still have more leaves or repeat the 1st verse again if it still needs work.

NOTE: You can break this activity up into two weeks and do one verse per week and finish the leaves the second time, when learning the second verse, or do all in 1 day, depending on the size of your primary.

8. WHICH PICTURES DON'T BELONG?

[Idea thanks to In a Pinch Primary Music]

WHAT YOU NEED:

Song Visuals

Pictures that don't belong -

Ex: food, playground, ocean, etc.

HOW TO PLAY:

Display several pictures on the board (some that fit the song and some that don't), fewer for Jr. Primary and more for Sr. Primary.

Tell the kids that as you sing the song, you want them to try and find the pictures that don't fit the song. Sing once through as the kids search.

At church version - Sing again but this time, let kids come up, one at a time, and take down a picture that doesn't belong. Repeat the song as you point to the remaining pictures. (Note: If using the actual SONG VISUALS, add on the game to have the kids help you put the pictures in order of the lyrics).

At home version - see video below starting at 4:36

9. SOCK PUPPETS

[Idea and pictures thanks to Julie S. Olsen]

WHAT YOU NEED:

Sock Puppets Family

From Julie: "Using homemade sock puppets to teach "Family History - I Am Doing It" today was a success. The kids thought they were silly, so it kept their attention. There was grandma, grandpa, sister, and brother."

Use the puppets and have the kids imitate them while learning the song, phrase-by-phrase.

Pass out the other puppets and let students behaving well use them as they sing.

10. SONG PICTURES

[Hand-drawn pictures thanks to Chelsie Cermak]

WHAT YOU NEED:

Song Pictures to Fit Each Phrase of the Song

HOW TO PLAY:

Option 1: Display the pictures on the board and gradually take 1 until they are all gone.

Option 2: Fix the Order - Rearrange out of order and let kids put in the right order. Repeat the song (of course!) to check.

Option 3: Place pictures around the room and have the kids turn towards the right picture for each phrase as they sing.

                             OR DRAW YOUR OWN...

11. FAMILY WORDS/FAMILY PICS

[Idea and pictures thanks to Abbey H. Button]

WHAT YOU NEED:

Board & Chalk or Dry Erase Marker

HOW TO PLAY:

Prep by writing some of the keywords on the board and divide into rectangles. Each time the kids sing a verse, let a couple kids come up and erase a word and draw in their family. Continue until all words have been replaced with family drawings.
