1. SONG STORY

WHAT YOU NEED:

Families Can Be Together Forever SONG STORY - FREE in the printables library, login/register below

Have the teachers pass out paper and a crayon to each child. Ask them to draw their family while you sing. (Encourage them to sing along as they draw, as they can).  Tell the kids they have 3x's through the song to finish. After have half the room stand up and show their pictures as everyone sings, then the other half. Briefly talk about how not everyone's family will look or act the same but that Heavenly Father's plan is for us to all be together forever.

There is also a good story from the Children's Friend that brings up divorce in a simple, comforting way in relation to singing this song in primary.

And here is another song story / story song version using a story from President Nelson (thanks to Katie Peterson).

2. DIRECTED LISTENING

WHAT YOU NEED:

Questions to Ask the Kids (see below or make up your own)

Verse 1

As you sing the first verse ask the kids to listen for:

What do we have here on earth? What do we call the people we live with?

[I have a family here on earth]

How families are suppose to treat each other? [they are so good to me] - families should treat

What do they want to share with them? [my life]

For how long? [through all eternity]

Chorus

Families can be together for how long? [forever]

How are we able to be together forever? [Through Heavenly Father's Plan]

What do you always want to do? [be with my family]

Who has shown you how you can? [The Lord]

Verse 2

When should we prepare? [while I am in my early years]

What are we suppose to do while we are young? [I'll prepare most carefully]

Why is it important prepare most carefully? [so I can marry in God’s temple for eternity]

3. HEAVENLY FAMILY CHAIN

WHAT YOU NEED:

Paper chain links - enough for one for each child,

plus ADAM - EVE - GOD - JESUS - and HEAVENLY MOTHER

Tape

Crayons

PREP:

Connect 5 chain links together (Adam, Eve, God, Jesus, Heavenly Mother).

HOW TO USE:

Pass out a chain piece and crayon to each child.

Show the kids the 5 connected chain links. Ask the kids what they think it has to do with families and Heavenly Father. Take answers.

Tell them in this song that we sing about our Earthly families and our Heavenly Families. We all came from God, all the way back to Adam and Eve. We are all one big family! Tell the kids we all LINK into God's eternal family and that will happen at different points in life (and that maybe that won't happen in this life, but that doesn't mean we can't have that blessing if we remain faithful).

NOTE: Precursor this activity with the FIRST PLACE (gold place) activity (see #4 below) and discussing how all families look different on earth.

As you sing the song, let the kids write their name (or color on their paper chain piece if they can't write yet). Then let a couple kids at a time come up and add their chain on. Keep repeating the song verses until all the kids chain pieces have been connected.

4. 1st PLACE/GOLD PLACE

WHAT YOU NEED:

3 cups (1st/gold, 2nd/silver, 3rd/bronze)

GET THE TROPHY PRINTABLE IN THE LIBRARY - black and white & color versions (register below).

Ask the kids how many medal places people can win in the Olympics (Gold/Silver/Bronze).

Show them the pedestal drawn on the board and place the 3 cups on the appropriate pedestals.

Briefly talk about how families on earth look a lot of different ways and a lot of families haven't reached the "ideal"/ the "perfect" place (i.e. 1st/gold place) of father/mother/kids all sealed and living righteously. None of us are perfect...YET, but that God's plan provides a way we can have those blessings someday, even if we don't have them now, and that even if our earthly family isn't perfect, or even very good, we still will always have our Heavenly Family... (go to #3 FAMILY CHAIN).

SEE expanded thoughts on this in the "How to Approach..." article

5. DRAW YOUR FAMILY

WHAT YOU NEED:

Paper

Crayons

Chalk or Dry Erase Markers

PREP:

Put enough papers and crayons with each class teacher

to distribute later to their kids.

Or you can let a couple kids at a time come up to the board and draw their families as everyone sings then tell one fun fact about their family. Repeat the verse and let more kids come up. Repeat for each verse and chorus.

6. HEART PUZZLE GAME

WHAT YOU NEED:

Families Can Be Together Forever Heart Puzzle Game (& MELODY MAP) - get in SHOP / get in GOLD LIBRARY

PREP:

Cut out puzzle pieces (7 hearts, 14 pieces total) and either put up around the room (on walls, under chairs, on back of piano, etc.) or have in a pile ready to hand out to kids or have all the pieces up on the board.

HOW TO PLAY:

1. Pieces around the room - As everyone sings, go around and touch kids to go find puzzle pieces then come stand at the front. Repeat the verse (or song) until all the puzzle pieces have been found. Then repeat the verse (or song) again, a phrase at a time, to find the matches and put up on the board.

2. Hand out to kids  - hand the pieces out to random kids as everyone sings. Use the same process as in #1 above with pieces around the room.

3. Pieces all displayed on the board - Have the kids sing the first part of the phrase then stop and ask them what comes next. Call a student up to find the match and put that heart match together as everyone sings the phrase again. Put the match together then sing the phrase again. (That's 3x's repetition per phrase! :) Repeat for each phrase until you've done the whole verse. Then sing the verse again, this time without any stops. Repeat the process for each verse and chorus.
