Come Follow Me Ideas

  • Help one of the children read the phrase “They … searched the scriptures daily” (Acts 17:11). Invite the children to point to each day of the week on a calendar as they repeat this phrase with you. Sing together a song that teaches about the blessings of reading the scriptures, such as “Search, Ponder, and Pray” (Children’s Songbook, 109).

  • To teach the children that the scriptures testify of Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ, help them turn to a chapter in the scriptures, like Acts 17 or 18, and find words like God, Lord, or Jesus. (You may want to mark these words beforehand so the children can find them more easily.) Each time the children find one of these words, invite them to share something they know about Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.

  • Help the children read Acts 17:2–4, 10–12; 18:28, and invite them to look for what these passages have in common. According to these verses, what helped people believe the gospel of Jesus Christ? Invite the children to share favorite stories about Jesus that they have learned from the scriptures.

Scripture Treasure Hunt

WHAT YOU NEED:

Scripture Scavenger Hunt

The one-of-a-kind Scripture Scavenger Hunt will have your kids reading scriptures and finding the next clues while they learn about the power of the scriptures.

Each rhyming clue includes a principle on the power of the scriptures while challenging the kids to find the corresponding "scripture scroll." Scripture scrolls contain a scripture that further illustrates the corresponding clue.

I'm so excited about this one! You won't find ANYTHING like this Scripture bundle ANYWHERE else!

Favorite Gifts & Stories

WHAT YOU NEED:

Gift-wrapped copy of the scriptures

Couple favorite books

Invite the children to tell about favorite gifts they have received for birthdays or other occasions. Bring a gift-wrapped copy of the scriptures, let a child open it, and testify that the scriptures are a gift to us from Heavenly Father.

Show the children some books containing fictional stories, and ask them about their favorite stories. Show them the scriptures, and testify that the scriptures contain the word of God for us. They tell of people who really lived and things that really happened.

Share the messages found in 2 Timothy 3:15 and Moroni 10:3–5, helping the children to repeat a few phrases. Help them understand that they can know the scriptures are true for themselves.

Hide a picture of the Savior, and give the children clues to help them find it. Help the children understand how searching the scriptures can help us know Jesus Christ. Let the children take turns hiding the picture and giving clues to other children.

Sing together a song about learning the gospel, such as “Search, Ponder, and Pray” (Children’s Songbook, 109), and help the children make up actions to go with the words and let them while using the folder game. Share with the children one or two of your favorite scriptures, and tell them how you came to know the scriptures are true. If the children have favorite scriptures or scripture stories, invite them to share.

The Scriptures are a Great Treasure

WHAT YOU NEED:

  • Item of great personal value
  • scriptures
  • box or container
  • scriptures are a great treasure coloring page - in the printables library
  • I love scripture stories coloring page- FREE click on the picture below

Prep: Hide the scriptures in a box or container and hide that container in the room somewhere.

In this lesson you'll talk about how the scriptures (and gospel) is our greatest and most precious treasure. [For additional lesson ideas and extensions, see The Hidden Treasure & Pearl of Great Price parable ideas].

Show the children the item of personal value you have brought. Tell a few details about the item, such as how it is used, where you got it, or how long you have had it. Point out why it is important to you and how sad you would feel if it were lost, stolen, or broken. Explain that this item is one of your treasures.

What is a treasure? (Something of great worth.)

Story

Tell a story about a child who had a treasured possession. You may want to use the following story:

One of Ruth’s schoolmates had a locket that she wore to school every day. Ruth thought it was the most beautiful locket she had ever seen. She wished she could have one like it.

On the morning of Ruth’s birthday, her mother handed her a present. It was a small box wrapped with pretty paper and ribbon. Inside Ruth found a beautiful gold locket. It was shaped like a heart, and in the center was a sparkling pink stone. Ruth could hardly believe her eyes.

Discussion

How do you think Ruth felt about the locket?

What are some of your treasures? (You may need to suggest some ideas, such as a pet, a favorite toy or book, or an article of clothing.)

The Scriptures Are a Great Treasure

Treasure Hunt Activity

Explain that there is a treasure each of us can have that is greater than (name some of the things the children named as their treasures). This treasure is worth more than any item we can own. This treasure is so precious that many people are willing to give up everything they own to have it (gospel of Jesus Christ). Some are even willing to give up their lives for it.

Tell the children that to find out what this great treasure is, they are going on a treasure hunt. Explain that you have hidden a treasure in the room. Ask the children to search quietly for the treasure.

When the children have found the box or container, have a child open it and read the message aloud. Then have the children repeat the words of the message with you. (If you hid the picture of Jesus or the book of scripture, explain that this item represents the teachings of Jesus Christ. Tell the children that the teachings of Jesus Christ are a great treasure to us.)

Why are the scriptures (i.e. the gospel of Jesus Christ) a great treasure to us?

Emphasize that the scriptures/gospel of Jesus are a treasure to us because they teach us the gospel of Jesus us, how to follow Heavenly Father and Jesus, and return to live with him again. Let your kids color the free coloring page.

2 Timothy 3:15-17

The Scriptures Teach, Guide & Comfort Us

WHAT YOU NEED:

Picture of Jesus

Scripture Cards (in the printables library)

Scripture Scrolls from the Scripture Scavenger Hunt

Stuffed Animal or toy

In this lesson you will talk about ways the scriptures teach guide, comfort and help us return to Jesus.

Goal: To get the stuffed animal (which represents all of you) to Jesus

At one end of the room, put up the picture of Jesus. Then make a path around and across the room with the scripture cards and scripture scroll cards (use as many or as few as you have time for).

Put the stuffed animal by the first card. Read the card and scripture on the card then let your young kiddos move the stuffed animal to the next card spot. Continue until you've read and discussed each card and the stuffed animal or toy has made it to Jesus.

Repeat and let your kids step to the beat towards Jesus as you listen to and sing, "The Scriptures Can Lead Me To Jesus."

Other: Scripture Lifelines - kids decode and read scripture

Elder Stevenson spoke about “playbooks” that sports teams use to make plans for their games. He said that the scriptures and words of the prophets can be like a playbook for our life. They help us know what to do in different situations.

Let kids make scripture cards into their "playbook"...

Print out and tape together the scripture cards (click pictures below to access pdf) and let kids keep them in their scriptures or make a keychain flipbook they can add to their backpack or keep in their bag.
