Wheat & Tares Parable Play Mat Folder Game

(Combine with Parable of the Sower or keep separate)

WHAT YOU NEED:

Picture of Wheat & Picture of Tares (In printables library - Parables >> Mustard & Wheat Tares)

Wheat & Tares Play Mat Folder Game (available in the Parable of Sower, Wheat & Tares bundle or Parables Mega Bundle)

HOW TO USE:

Hold up the picture of wheat and tares without telling your children what they are. Ask them to tell you how similar they look. Are there any differences or is it hard to tell? Next, summarize the verses and teach your children about the parable of the wheat and tares. (Let kids place the figures on the folder game as you teach the story). Go back to the picture of wheat and tares and explain the picture on the top is wheat. Wheat is healthy and strong - represents people who make righteous choices. The picture on the bottom are tares. A tare is a poisonous and harmful weed - represents those who do not make righteous choices. One day, Heavenly Father will gather the righteous people to live with Him.

The tare lack substance but the wheat is heavy and bears fruit (grain). There are tiny black seeds inside the tares and if you eat it, it can cause dizziness and nausea. The tare stands straight up and proud while the wheat bows from the weight of the fruit in humility. Talk about the perfect physical and spiritual contrast between the wheat and the tare. One gives life, the other kills. Those in Christ have life, and the other death.

When we come to earth, we are given the freedom to choose between good and evil. It is up to us to choose whether we will be like the wheat or the tares.

COME FOLLOW ME

Come Follow Me - New Testament (Primary & Family)

Matthew 13:24–30, 36–43, 47–48

Let the children act out the parable of the wheat and the tares (see Matthew 13:24–30). [And add the pieces to the play mat folder pages - see picture below]. Explain that the wheat represents people who make righteous choices, and the tares (harmful weeds) represent people who do not. One day, Heavenly Father will gather the righteous people to live

with Him.

Give the children some examples of right and wrong choices. Ask the children to say “wheat choice” when you describe a right choice and “tare choice” when you describe a wrong choice.

Bring pictures of stalks of wheat, and let the children draw on the pictures some ways they can be righteous.

(FAMILY)

How can you help your family members understand the importance of willingly receiving Christ’s word? To demonstrate “ears [that] are dull of hearing,” you might cover a family member’s ears while you quietly read Matthew 13:13–16. How much did that family member understand from the verses? What are ways that we can open our eyes, ears, and hearts to the word of God? (See body parts poem in THIS post).
