Light of the World

This beautiful watercolor figures folder game is the perfect light lesson addition, making it easy to discuss, in very engaging and relatable ways for kids, how Jesus is our light, the things He's given us to help light our way, and situations of how we can share or hide our light.

WHAT'S IN THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD ACTIVITY BUNDLE ? LOTS!!

  • ITEMS THAT GIVE LIGHT - like Jesus (moon, flashlight, sun, fire, candle, etc.) with ways Jesus lights the way and how Jesus is the Light and Life of the World written on them.

  • CANDLES - with things Jesus gives us to help light our way written on them.

  • TALL (situation) CANDLES - situation written on each and kids decide if the situation is an example of sharing light (set on a hill) or not (putting it under a bushel) and place each candle on the hill or under the bushel.

  • SCRIPTURE TRACING AND COLORING
    • John 8:12 "I am the light of the world..."
    • John 14:6 "I am the way, the truth, and the light..."

How Does Light Enter Into Us? How Do We Receive It?

Elder Robert D. Hales of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles reminds us how we can have spiritual light: “When I was a boy, I used to ride my bicycle home from basketball practice at night. I would connect a small pear-shaped generator to my bicycle tire. Then as I pedaled, the tire would turn a tiny rotor, which produced … a single, welcome beam of light. … I learned quickly that if I stopped pedaling my bicycle, the light would go out. I also learned that when I was ‘anxiously engaged’ in pedaling, the light would become brighter and the darkness in front of me would be [forced away].”

Elder Hales explains that “spiritual light comes from daily spiritual pedaling. It comes from praying, studying the scriptures, fasting, and serving—from living the gospel and obeying the commandments” (“Out of Darkness into His Marvelous Light,” Ensign, May 2002, 71). When we live the gospel and keep the commandments, we can have the Light of Christ with us always.

How Can We Share His Light With Others? (see also TESTIMONY RESOURCES and "Full of Light" below, for additional ideas)

  • We can be like a candle - creating even a small light in the dark has a big impact (ex: bike pedal light story above).
  • We can be like a mirror and direct light even into dark places.
  • We are not the sources of light; nevertheless, through us, light can be reflected to others.

Sing together "Shine On" (Children's Songbook, 144). Print out and use the play mat folder game (see picture below), which talks about ways we can share the Light of Christ with others and how we can magnify the light of Christ in ourselves.

Stained-Glass Window Picture Craft

Print out the picture (click picture to the left below to access the jpg; copy and paste into a word doc then print). Trace the picture below onto plain white paper, and color the traced picture. Brush your picture very lightly with salad oil, and blot it with a towel.

Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf of the Presidency of the Seventy said that when he was growing up, his “chapel had a stained-glass window of Joseph Smith in the Sacred Grove. Whenever the sun shone on it, I felt that the story it illustrated and what I had learned in Primary about the First Vision were true” (Friend, June 1998, 6). Place your picture in a window to remind you of the light the Savior provides in your life.

Light the Path

WHAT YOU NEED:

Several fake candles or flashlights or tea lights

PREP: Set up the candles in a line leading from one end of the room to the other. Display a picture of Jesus at the other end.

Explore some of the sources of light in your home, your neighborhood, and the world.

Shine a flashlight around the room, and invite the children to follow the light with their eyes. Use the light to lead their eyes to a picture of the Savior. How does light help us? How can we be a light to the world? Cover the flashlight. What happens if we don’t share our light or if we hide it?

Ask children to name things they can do to be a light to others and as they do, let them turn on one light. Continue until all lights are lit.

Additional: Help the children find and color the hidden candles in the activity page below. (Click the picture to go to the pdf.)

Challenge: How can you let your light shine this week?

Do something nice for someone...

  • Help do something at home like clean up without being asked.
  • Be a friend to someone at school that doesn't have one - invite someone that looks lonely to play or talk to them.
  • Open a door for someone.
  • Smile at someone.
  • Give someone a compliment.
  • Call someone you haven't talked to in a long time.

Share the Gospel...

  • Share a Book of Mormon
  • Invite someone to church or a church activity
  • Share why you love the Savior
  • See other suggestions on "Shine On" folder game for ways to share the gospel. Choose one way to share the gospel to complete your challenge).

Full of Light

Luke 11:33–36

Full of Light

Key Concept: As we follow the Savior, we can become full of light.

Ponder how you might teach your family what it means to be “full of light” (verses 34, 36). Would an object lesson help? (Use SHINE ON folder game and Jesus is the Light of the World Game for activities on light - Jesus is our light and letting our own light shine. See the descriptions to learn more about

Discuss ways to bring the Savior’s light into our lives, our home, and the world. Print out the home and world pages and discuss the things listed and name others. (In the printables library under Light >> Light Coloring Bundle.

Let kids write or draw in other things they could do in addition to those listed.

(Also see the video “The Light That Shineth in Darkness,” ChurchofJesusChrist.org for additional ideas.)

Over the years we have adopted, as part of our regular family dialogue, that simple, penetrating question: “Do you see any light in that?” We ask this question frequently as we seek after things that are “virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy” (Articles of Faith 1:13) or as we are bombarded with worldly influences. Simply by being on guard and by using this somewhat obvious filter, we have learned that it is quite easy to differentiate between what is light and what is dark—between things that inspire us and bring us closer to the Spirit and things that do not.

As you and I follow the Savior and embrace the light, we become “children of light” (1 Thessalonians 5:5), His sons and His daughters. As we continue on this path, we learn and grow and gain even more light (see D&C 50:24).

We have been given the light of the gospel through the Atonement of Jesus Christ. We know what God expects from us, His beloved children. We have His Spirit to guide and direct us. To become children of light means to reject the power of the adversary and to choose daily to follow the Light of Christ.

Dark & Afraid

Ask: What we can do when we are in darkness and feel afraid.

How can we seek and find the light of the Savior when the world is dark?

Sing with your kiddos: (Tune: Twinkle, Twinkle)

When I'm in the dark and feel afraid,

I'll pray to God and ask for aid.

I'll ask for strength to carry on,

I'll read a scripture, sing a song.

When I'm in the dark and feel afraid,

I'll pray to God and ask for aid.

Sing with your kiddos: (Tune: Brahms Lullaby - Lullaby and Goodnight)

Poem in the picture on the RIGHT side.

Let Your Light Shine Board Game

WHAT YOU NEED:

Light Board Game pintable (FREE)

Mount the game board and cards on heavy paper or poster board. Cut out the cards and place them facedown beside the game board. Use old buttons, large seeds, or pebbles as markers. The object of the game is to “bring a friend to the light.” As you play, you will discover many important ways in which you can let your light shine, be a friend, and share the gospel with others.

To play: Each player puts a marker for himself, and a second one for a “pretend friend,” on the Start square. (You could even choose a name for your pretend friend.) Mix the cards well and place them facedown in a pile next to the game board. The first player draws a card, reads it aloud, then moves both his and his friend’s markers the number of spaces indicated on the card. If a player lands on a small Light, he moves both markers ahead one more space. Continue, taking turns. The first player to reach the large Light continues to take his turn, helping the other players until all players and their pretend friends reach the large Light.

When you are not playing the game, practice actually doing the good things you learn in the game, and let your light shine wherever you go. Make new cards for your game as you think of other ways to let your light shine.

Flashlight Scavenger Hunt

WHAT YOU NEED:

  • Flashlights for everyone
  • Small items to hide (such as prizes or small chocolate coins)
  • PREPARATION: Hide the items in a dark room (making sure the items will be visible when a flashlight is shined on them).
  • I'll Let My Light Shine activity page - in printables library CFM Jan-June boolet link.
  • Shine On - in printables library under Light << SHINE ON Matt 5:16, Let My Light Sine)

Tell the kids they will find items in a dark room with their flashlights. Then pass out the flashlights and allow them to search for the items. When the activity is complete, discuss how our good works* are like lights that point others to good things, like the best thing: Jesus! Allow the children to keep the small treasures they found.

*Reemphasize that one way we can share our light is by using the specific personality traits, talents, interests, and abilities God has given us to show others the love and light of Christ.

Read Matthew 5:14-16Then distribute the handout and writing/drawing utensils and talk to the children about identifying their strengths and brainstorming how God can use them (consider using yourself as an example and showing kids your completed page). Let them write or draw ways they can let their light shine. Lastly, ask them to quietly pray on their own and ask God to help them shine their light for others and how they can do that.

Light Switch Object Lesson

[Idea credit: Sermons4kids.com]

WHAT YOU NEED:

A light switch toy

What's this? Yep, a light switch. It's not very bright. It's not bright at all. What's wrong with it? ......Oh, I have to turn on the switch……right……that better??

You know Jesus talked about light. In Matt 5:14-16, Jesus said, "Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven."

When Jesus told us we are the light of the world, He was giving us a picture of who we are supposed to be. We should act in such a way that others see Jesus in us and because of what they see they glorify God.

Our problem is that we see this picture Jesus has given us in modern terms. We think about lights today. Lights today come with a switch. We can turn them on and off easily. That is often our view of Christianity today; we turn it on and off as we please. If we want to act like the cool kids around us for a while, we just turn our light off and we act like the world. Then when we feel like doing something for Jesus, we turn it back on again. If we don't want to talk to that person sitting all alone on the playground, we just turn off our light. When we decide to help someone pick up all their papers, they just dropped, we turn it back on again. When we don't stick up for someone that others are making fun of, we turn off our light. When we are at church, we turn the light back on. Funny thing is, that doesn’t work. When we act like the world, like people who don't know Jesus…..the world think we're just like them. Then when we decide to turn on our light, the world sees us as a fake, a phony.

The truth is, switching the light off means knowingly and willingly choosing to sin. We are not doing what Jesus told us to do. Sin brings darkness instead of light. Remember, Jesus said we are not to put our lamp under a basket and hide it.

The next time you feel think about hiding your Christian faith, remember Jesus told us to let our lights shine so that others seeing our good works, would glorify our Father in heaven. We don't let our light shine so others will say good things about us, we let our light shine so others will glorify God. I pray you will let your light shine today and throughout this week everywhere you go.

SAY

"I'll let my light shine ALL the time, not just when it's convenient."

Teach Me to Walk in the Light

WHAT YOU NEED:

Teach Me to Walk Song bundle - in Gold Library

HOW TO USE:

Board Game: Cut out the circle buttons and place them on the green road map as singing, "Teach Me to Walk in the Light" (Children's Songbook, #177).

Footsteps: You can use the footsteps in a variety of ways.

Here's a few ideas to get you started:

1. Cut out the bigger footsteps and make a path around the room. Invite a couple students at a time to follow the path as everyone sings. (Let the path lead to a big picture (or life-size cut-out figure of Jesus. By the end of the verse, the kids should be to Jesus). Repeat and invite more kids to walk the path, as time allows.

2. Question Stop: Place the bigger footsteps in a circle on the floor (or the smaller footsteps on the board in a circle). Choose a few kids to come and walk on the footsteps (or choose one child to come up and trace around the circle of footsteps-with a fun pointer (option)- as everyone sings. At the end of each phrase, yell "Stop." Have the child on the footstep of the phrase that was just sung pick up the footstep and read (or you read) the question on the back. Have the students sing that phrase again while they try to discover the answer. Then let the kids answer. Repeat until you've done the questions for all the footsteps.

3. Jesus Guides Us Freeze: As in number two but randomly call out "Stop" and call on a child to name a way that Jesus leads and guides us.
