Jesus Gives His Prophets & Apostles Power

To Do His Work

We Have a Prophet on the Earth Today

WHAT YOU NEED:

Matthew 10:1-10 Activity Page - available in the Prophets Activity Bundle*

Prophets & Apostles cards - FREE; click picture on the right below to go to pdf.

Crayons

Glue stick(s)

PREP:

  • Print, cut and prepare the cards: Glue picture cards and about cards back-to-back. (Add on to the back of each card a few things that the prophet and apostle has taught, if desired.)
  • Print the Matthew 10:1-10 Activity Page. Cut out the picture strips ahead, if desired.

Day of Lesson Prep: Hide the prophet and apostle cards around the room.

Explain that during his lifetime, Jesus calls Apostles to help Him build His Church. Ask if anyone knows any of the names of the apostles of Jesus time. As you read Matthew 10:1–10, let the kids color, cut out (or help them cut out) and paste the apostles and powers picture strips on the Matthew 10:1-10 activity page. Briefly discuss.

Let the children count the Apostles on their activity page or in the picture Christ Ordaining the Apostles (Gospel Art Book, no. 38) and then of the current Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. Explain that we have twelve Apostles today, just as in Jesus’s time.

Explain that just like Jesus called prophets during his lifetime to help build and organize the church, there are still prophets and apostles today. Show the picture of the current prophet. Tell the children something you know about the prophet. Have the children stand and say, “(Name of the living prophet) is a prophet of God.”

Ask: Why do we need a living prophet? Heavenly Father has given us prophets to guide us and teach us so we can know what Heavenly Father and Jesus want us to do and so we can be happy. Let the kids watch "Why Do We Have Prophets?" video below.

As the kids sing songs about prophets and apostles, let them find the cards. Then come back all together and read the cards.

Let kids share their testimonies of the prophet. Testify of the divine callings of the prophets and apostles.

Prophets & Apostles Testify of Jesus Christ

WHAT YOU NEED:

Prophets Cards (click picture above the video on the right to go to pdf)

Prep: Add some of the teachings of each apostle on the back of each card, along with the details about their lives.

Explain that not long after Christ was resurrected, the Apostles were called to be His witnesses (see Acts 1:8). As you study the New Testament, you can read of many instances when the Apostles testified that Jesus Christ is the Son of God (see also Acts 2:36; 5:27–32; 10:36–44). The Apostles today continue in this call as special witnesses—just listen to any general conference and you will see how they testify of Christ.

Invite a child to hold up a picture of the First Presidency and a picture of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. Ask the child to lead the other kids around the room to a picture of Jesus. Testify that the prophets and apostles lead us to Jesus Christ.

Hide pictures of the Apostles around the room or simply place all the cards in a basket and let a child draw one. Share several examples of Apostles’ testimonies of Christ (and as time allows, other past prophets and apostles). After each child reads their card (or teachers read the card for younger kids or those that need help reading), share the testimony of that apostle as well (click the links below to go to the testimonies of the prophet and apostles).

Testimonies of the Prophets & Apostles of the Restoration

Testimonies of the Modern Prophets & Apostles

Invite kids to share their testimonies. Let them fill out (or take-home and fill out) the "MY TESTIMONY" activity page - in the printables library. Share your testimony of Jesus and His gospel.

Prophet Coloring & Activity Pages

Print out and let your kiddos trace and color along with lessons on prophets.

Jesus & Moses Similarities

Folder Game

Learn about the amazing similarities of the lives of Jesus Christ and Moses with this fun, engaging, simple folder game where kids match the circles with Jesus and Moses and compare! (Ex: King kills babies - Jesus / Pharaoh kills babies - Moses)

EXODUS 1–2 (Come Follow Me 2022)

Jesus Christ is my Deliverer.

One of the central themes in the book of Exodus is that God has power to free His people from oppression. The enslavement of the Israelites as described in Exodus 1 could be seen as a symbol of the captivity we all face because of sin and death (see 2 Nephi 2:26–27; 9:10; Alma 36:28). And Moses, the Israelites’ deliverer, can be seen as a type, or representation, of Jesus Christ (see Deuteronomy 18:18–19; 1 Nephi 22:20–21).

Read Exodus 1–2 with these comparisons in mind. You might notice, for example, that both Moses and Jesus were preserved from death as small children (see Exodus 1:22–2:10; Matthew 2:13–16) and that both spent time in the wilderness before beginning their ministry (see Exodus 2:15–22; Matthew 4:1–2). What other insights do you learn from Exodus about spiritual captivity? about the Savior’s deliverance?

DEUTERONOMY 18:15–19 (Come Follow Me 2022)

Jesus Christ is the Prophet who would be raised up like unto Moses.

Peter, Nephi, Moroni, and the Savior Himself all commented on the prophecy in Deuteronomy 18:15–19 (see Acts 3:20–23; 1 Nephi 22:20–21; Joseph Smith— History 1:40; 3 Nephi 20:23). What do you learn about the Savior from these verses? How is the Savior “like unto” Moses? (Deuteronomy 18:15).

Follow the Leader

Explain that the prophet is the leader of the Church.

Play “Follow the Leader” with the children. Have the children stand in a line. The first child in line runs, hops, skips, or does some other action to the other side of the room. The other children follow the first child, doing what he or she did. Then the first child goes to the end of the line, and the next child becomes the new leader. Continue until each child has had a turn to be the leader.

Another Version: Invite a child to hold up a picture of the First Presidency and a picture of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. Ask the child to lead the other children around the room to a picture of Jesus.

After the game, share that if we follow the things he tells us to do, he will lead us back to Heavenly Father and Jesus. Testify that the prophets and apostles lead us to Jesus Christ.

I Will Follow the Prophet By...

WHAT YOU NEED:

I Will Follow The Prophet By Mobile Craft - in the Prophets Activity Bundle

Read Matthew 10:40.

Think of some situations where the children could follow the prophet’s teachings. Describe each situation to the class, and have the children tell or act out what they would do in each situation to follow the prophet.

For example: “You see some money in the kitchen. You would like to have it, but you know it belongs to your mother. What will you do to follow the prophet’s teaching to be honest?”

"You see a child sitting alone at recess. What will you do to follow the prophet's teachings to be kind?"

"You see a mom with her hands full with kids and a stroller trying to open the chapel door. What will you do to follow the prophet's teachings to help others?

"Your friends invite you to a party where you know there will probably be bear and smoking. What will you do to follow the prophet's teachings to avoid temptation and stand for the right?"

etc.

Let the kids put together the prophet mobile craft (1 for the whole class or family to work on together) and have them repeat the sentence “I will follow our prophet by....” with a way they can follow the prophet (on the mobile and other ways they come up with.)

Ask: How is obedience to the prophets & apostles counsel bringing us closer to Jesus Christ?Bear your testimony that as we obey our prophet, we are blessed just as people were in ancient times.

PROPHETS & APOSTLES TEACH US ABOUT JESUS

Pictures of Several Prophets

Examples: Adam (Moses 5:4–12, 58–59), Enoch (Moses 6:26–28; Moses 7:13–21), Noah (Gen. 6–8), Moses (Ex. 3; Num. 14), Daniel (Dan. 6).

Sit behind the picture of the prophet - use as your face - and let the kids interview the "prophet." Suggest questions that will help them discover who each prophet is, what he asked the people to do, and how the people who obeyed his teachings were blessed.

Click HERE for an example list of a few prophets and what they taught, with scripture references.

Also use THIS PRINTABLE and have kids repeat for each prophet what the prophets teach us:

Daniel taught us that we should pray.

John the Baptist taught us to be baptized.

Samuel the Lamanite taught us to obey Heavenly Father.

Joseph Smith taught us to read the scriptures.

Ask the children what our living prophet have asked us to do today.

Continue below ("We are blessed when we follow the prophet.")

We Are Blessed When We Follow the Prophet

WHAT YOU NEED

Prophet & Blessings Match printable - click HERE to access pdf with a few options.

(Find additional figures as needed/desired)

Let kids match the prophet with the corresponding item (ex: Noah & Ark, Joseph Smith & Book of Mormon, Moses & Red Sea). Explain that because people followed (prophet), they were (blessing) - Ex: Noah’s family followed him, they were saved from a flood; because the Israelites followed Moses, they were led out of Egypt into a better land; because people followed Joseph Smith, they became members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Explain that these people were blessed because they followed the prophet. We will also be blessed when we follow the prophet. Let kids name ways they are blessed when they follow the prophet and say, "I am blessed when I follow the prophet."

Prophet Treasure Hunt

Teaching children the words of our prophets are a treasure. Go HERE (goes to church site - Primary Lesson 8: The Church of Jesus Christ Has Prophets to Teach Us) for the lesson, which includes a treasure hunt.

Serve Like the Prophets game printable

Prophets, Seers & Revelators

WHAT YOU NEED:

Prophets Play Mat Flip-Tab Game

To help family members understand what a seer is, perhaps you could show them pictures of tools that help us see things we couldn’t otherwise see, such as binoculars, a telescope, or a microscope. How are these tools like a seer? (see Moses 6:35–36). What can seers see that we do not? What evidence do we have that Joseph Smith was a seer? What evidence do we have the (current prophet) is a seer? (Ex: President Nelson and the Come Follow Me program implementation BEFORE Covid shut down everything).

Show the children how to hold their hands up to their eyes as if they were looking through glasses or binoculars. Read Mosiah 8:16-17, and ask the children to put on their “glasses” each time they hear the word “seer.” Explain that God has given us prophets and that one of the roles of a prophet is to be a “seer” because he can “see” things to come. Share some examples of things that prophets have seen and revealed to us (including the scriptures), or share an example of when a prophet was acting as a seer (such as 1 Nephi 11:20–21).

The Prophets play mat flip-tab page has questions about prophets. Read the question, read the scriptures listed, then flip the tab up to reveal the answers.

Signs To Guide & Warn

WHAT YOU NEED:

"PROPHECY" Signs Letters Game

Place the signs around the room.

Note: Visitor park, go, stop, slow, route 66, viewing area signs = some of the things that the prophets have prophesied would happen if we do certain things (ex: if we pay tithing, the windows of heaven will be opened to us-Ma. 3:10). The others signs each have one of the dangers that the Apostle Paul warned would exist in the last days.

Invite a few students to share examples of situations or places in which one would expect to see posted warnings (examples might include on traffic signs, medicine bottles, or hazardous materials containers.) Explain that some road signs warn us of danger ahead, while others help us appreciate where we are.

Ask: What are some possible consequences of ignoring the signs?

Read D&C 1:4 - "And the voice of warning shall be unto all people, by the mouths of my disciples, whom I have chosen." What are some warnings that prophets have given about the temporal and spiritual dangers that exist in our day?

Ask someone to read 2 Timothy 3:1–7 and 13 aloud while kids looks for the signs that have been posted around the room. Have the kids bring all the signs up to the front.

Ask: Which of the dangers that Paul describes have you seen or heard about?

Ask: What effect might these dangers have on individuals, marriages, and families?

Read each road sign and discover what we are promised if we follow the prophets’ direction and the dangers we need to avoid. Tell a short story about a time when you or another person were blessed for their obedience to that principle or in avoid the danger.

Testify that if we follow the road signs, we will be much safer as we travel and enjoy the trip. Just like the road signs, when we follow the prophets’ directions, Heavenly Father will protect and bless us on our journey through life.

SINGING ACTIVITY

After the children have finished their trip to as many signs as time allows, choose some to hold the Stop, Go, Slow, and Caution signs. Sing songs that reinforce the prophets’ teachings and have the children hold up their signs when you tap them on the shoulder. The singing will then “stop,” “go,” “slow” down, or be sung softly (“caution”). Possible songs from CS: "Follow the Prophet," "We Thank Thee Oh God For A Prophet," “Dare to Do Right” (p. 158); “Seek the Lord Early” (p. 108); “Search, Ponder, and Pray” (p. 109).

Have the children draw their own road signs and write how they will follow a direction from one of the prophets during the coming week. Have them take the signs home and put them up in their rooms to help them remember to heed the words of the prophets.

PROPHECY MATCHING GAME

WHAT YOU NEED:

Prophecy letters

Pictures of the Prophets - get from General Art Kit (GAK) in church library or elsewhere

Get a list of additional prophets and prophecies HERE

Print out and prepare the PROPHECY matching game. Display the pictures of the prophets who gave the prophecies. Put them in order so that when all the letters have been matched with the prophets, they spell out prophecy. Hide the letters around the room. Have the children search for them. Those who find the letters read the prophecy, match it to the prophet who gave it, and hang the letter below his picture. Ask what the children think happened after the prophecy was given. Tell them what did happen. Continue until all the letters have been posted.

Prophets Teachings

Use these resources to add to lessons on the prophets and apostles and their teachings.

Prophets Wheel - spin and read something that that each prophet is remembered for.

Prophets Believers Game - Each prophet is a wonderful “example of the believers.” Play this game to help you remember some of our prophets’ good examples.

Teachings/Songs Activity Idea:

Choose one thing each Latter-day prophet has taught (see “Latter-day Prophets,” Friend, Oct. 1995, pp. 24–25; GAK 400, 507–520, backs of pictures) and select a song from the CS that reinforces that teaching.

Examples:

• Joseph Smith / Word of Wisdom / “The Lord Gave Me a Temple,” p. 153

• John Taylor / God loves His children everywhere / “God Is Watching Over All,” p. 229

• Lorenzo Snow / tithing / “I’m Glad to Pay a Tithing,” p. 150

• Heber J. Grant / everyone is invited to come unto Christ / “He Sent His Son,” pp. 34–35

• George Albert Smith / loving each other / “Love One Another,” p. 136

• Ezra Taft Benson / Book of Mormon study / “Book of Mormon Stories,” p. 118

• Gordon B. Hinckley / temples / “I Love to See the Temple,” p. 95.)

Display the prophets’ pictures. Have their names and what they taught on one side of a piece of paper; on the other side, the name of the corresponding song. Have a child draw a piece of paper from a container and read (or you read) about that prophet’s teaching and match his name with his picture; then have all the children sing the song. (Also see idea below)

  • On the back of a picture of the President of the Church, tape small pictures of things he teaches about, like the Savior, baptism, or a temple. Let each child take a turn looking at one of the pictures and telling the rest of the class, “The prophet teaches us about [the topic of the picture].” Testify that prophets and apostles teach us what Jesus wants us to know and do.
