SEE THE VINE & BRANCHES PARABLE POST FOR LOTS OF FUN LESSON IDEAS (pictured in the gallery below).

What are you doing to know Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ? (Fill in the tree branches activity page in the CFM 2023 Kids Activity Book).

Think of someone that you know. How did you get to know them?

By talking with them. (How do we do that with Heavenly Father & Jesus? Through prayer).

By hanging out with them and doing things together. (How do we "hang out" with Heavenly Father?" (Read scriptures, books, stories, testimonies about them, prayer, etc.).

A FUN, AWESOME WAY TO TEACH KIDS ABOUT THE CHARACTERISTICS OF HEAVENLY FATHER & JESUS.

GODHEAD FLIPBOOKS: Let kids color and put together these 3 fun flipbooks, one for each member of the Godhead (Heavenly Father, Jesus, Holy Ghost).  Kids sort 36 squares which characteristics describing each member of the Godhead and determine which belongs to each.

TOPICS

John 14:5–6

How is Jesus “the way”? (FAMILY)

Additional scripture: “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).

Activity Option 1: Bring rocks to build your own small cairn in class or at home. Each time a student names a way that Jesus is "the way," let them add a rock (note: build at home before so you can find stones that are easier to get to stay on top of each other. Or, just bring blocks and tell the kids they represent rocks. Or, use the cairn 3D John 4:16 craft).

Explain that cairns are used to mark trails that might be hard to follow. (She kids pictures of some cairns / cairns). Explain that cairns keep hikers from getting lost. They tell hikers which way to go. Jesus is a lot like a cairn. He is the way to eternal life. We don't have to be lost in sin because Jesus made a way for us to be forgiven from our sins, live a good life, and to live forever in heaven.

Let kids color and write in ways that Jesus is "the way" and ways they can follow Him on the paper cairn coloring pages. (Available in the Jesus is the Way activity bundle).

Activity Option 2: Use the Jesus is the Way play mat folder game and add items on to the map as you discuss how Jesus is the way - items we use that show us the way and on the back how Jesus is the way, the truth, the life.

Activity Option 3:  Make a path leading from one end of the room to the other. Put a picture of Heavenly Father and Jesus in Heaven at the end. Have kids draw a card (see "Dare to Do Right" card game), read the scenario then have kids step forward or backwards, according to each (forward if they are following "the way" or back if they are not and taking a different "way").

Additional Ideas: (Tailor to the age group you teach)

A way is a path or route. (A “way” (Greek hodos) was a road or highway for traveling from one place to another and could also refer to one’s course of behavior or “way of life.”) Have you ever been lost before? Why did you get lost? How did you find your way back? Have you ever followed a path and stayed on the path, followed the sign posts/directions, etc? How are these things like life? How does Jesus provide a way back when we have lost our way?

Draw a path on the board. At one end of the path write Us, and at the other end write Heavenly Father’s Kingdom. Write The Way under the path, and point out that this phrase refers to the path that leads from one place to another.

How is the Savior the Way? (Students might respond that the Savior shows us how to live in order to become like God and how to be worthy to dwell in Heavenly Father’s presence.) - Use cairn and folder game activities as you discuss. (See in list above).

Write The Truth and The Life on the board under “The Way.”

In what ways is Jesus Christ the Truth? (He is the source of all truth and lived all truth perfectly.)

In what ways is Jesus the Life? (He makes it possible for us to overcome physical death and be resurrected with immortal physical bodies and to overcome spiritual death to obtain eternal life. He is “the light which is in all things, which giveth life to all things” [D&C 88:13].)

Under the drawing of the path on the board, write Jesus Christ Is next to “The Way.”

Based on what we have discussed, how would you summarize the meaning of the Savior’s statement that “no man cometh unto the Father, but by me”? (John 14:6). (Students may use different words but should identify a truth similar to the following: Only through the Atonement of Jesus Christ and by following His way can we enter Heavenly Father’s kingdom.)

What will happen if we try to follow a way that is not the Savior’s way?

Invite a student to read aloud the following statement by Elder Lawrence E. Corbridge of the Seventy. Ask the class to listen for what will happen if we try to follow a way that is not the Savior’s way.

“There is only one way to happiness and fulfillment. He is the Way. Every other way, any other way, whatever other way, is foolishness. …

“… We can either follow the Lord and be endowed with His power and have peace, light, strength, knowledge, confidence, love, and joy, or we can go some other way, any other way, whatever other way, and go it alone—without His support, without His power, without guidance, in darkness, turmoil, doubt, grief, and despair. And I ask, which way is easier? …

“There is only one way to happiness and fulfillment. Jesus Christ is the Way” (“The Way,” Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2008, 34, 36).

Ask students to ponder experiences they have had in which they were blessed by following the Savior’s way.

Invite a few of them to share their experiences.

How has Jesus Christ overcome the world? How has His Atonement brought us peace and good cheer?

How is Jesus’s peace different from the kind “the world giveth”?

Persecution (FAMILY)

Despite All Obstacles (Idea: Ministry to Children)

Set up an obstacle course with two mirror paths. Divide the kids or family into two teams. One student from each team runs the obstacle course at a time while the other team members line up along the length of the obstacle course. When they’re not running, the members of the opposite team throw soft balls or paper wads at the runner from the sidelines.

If a student makes it through the obstacle course without being hit, they score a point for their team and return to the sidelines. If they are hit, they go to the sidelines to throw but not run again. After each pair runs the course, gather the balls or paper wads again for the next two to run.

The game ends when all the students have run the course. The team with the most points wins.

Afterward, explain that we have to do the right things in life even when it seems difficult. There might be things that get in the way of us doing the right thing. There might be people who try to keep us from doing the right thing, but we have to keep doing what we know is right.

Faith vs. Fear

Ask: What would you do if one of your friends started making fun of you for going to church?

What would you do if one of your friends didn’t believe in God and they thought you were weird because you did believe in God?

What would you do if someone told you that you weren’t allowed to go to church or to believe in Jesus anymore?

Read Matthew 5:10-12 and John scriptures listed above.

“Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

Jesus says that if we will be brave and stand up for Him, even when other people think we’re weird or make fun of us or even hurt us for believing in Him, then He will reward us. We will get to go to Heaven to be with Him and will live with God and Jesus forever. He says that we’ll be like one of His prophets! So, be brave and never be afraid to say that you believe in Jesus!
