Tips to teach Hymns to Children

I love these tips from Sharla Dance on teaching hymns:

1. Divide and conquer.

2. Choose the important concept to teach.

3. Give the children more “hooks” and different experiences with a hymn

than you normally would a smaller song.

JESUS LIVES SIGN

Depicting sweet, hopeful, and beautiful images of Christ and His mercy, display this beautiful sign at home or at church along with any lesson on Jesus and His resurrection. Or, use during singing time along songs about Jesus Lives, Jesus Resurrection, etc. by letting the kids display a letter each time they complete a task (i.e. learn a phrase of the music, tap the rhythm of a verse, etc.).

NAMES OF JESUS

NOTE: FOR SONG "MY REDEEMER LIVES" not I know that my Redeemer Lives but you can still use as an activity for either song.

Ask the kids to listen for all the names of Jesus they hear as you sing. Repeat singing to them several times, asking them to join in as they can. List the names they fine on the board after each repetition.

Note: To give kids clues, place the letters on the board and tell the kids some of the names of Jesus in the song begin with the letters they see on the board. (Get the letters in the My Redeemer Lives bundle).

OSTINATO FUN

An ostinato is a repeated rhythmic pattern. Use a variety of different instruments to play this ostinato: rhythm sticks, maraca, egg shaker, wrist bells, etc.

HOW TO PLAY:

Divide the primary in half and have half the kids chant/tap the ostinato while the other sing then switch.

Other variations:

Add different movement patterns to the ostinato:

  • clap hands together once and circle out and back together (like each hand drawing 1/2 a heart) then patsch/pat - patsch/pat the lap (on the quarter notes)
  • raise arms up and out (in a V shape) on half note then clap-clap on the two quarter notes
  • Wave Jesus Lives flags*: Circle around head on half note - rainbow overhead on quarter notes or draw triangle shape (2 counts for one side one the half note & 1 count for the other two triangle sides) - ex: up 2 counts on left, down one count on right, across bottom of triangle for one count.

BUILD A JESUS LIVES QUILT

WHAT YOU NEED:

My Redeemer Lives bundle

HOW TO PLAY:

Let kids add pictures to the board for each song phrase. Place the pictures right next to each other (as pictured) until the entire quilt is built. Briefly mention how we can take comfort in knowing that "My Redeemer Lives" and let a few students share how knowing Jesus is our Savior and that He lives brings them comfort.

CRACK-THE-CODE KEYWORD FIRST LETTERS OF WORDS

WHAT YOU NEED:

My Redeemer Lives bundle

HOW TO PLAY:

(For Sr. Primary)

Put the first letter of the song verse words up on the board (see guide in bundle).

Tell the kids the letters belong to words in each song phrase and they should try and figure out which words the letters belong to. Let the kids figure out which words belong to which letters phrase-by-phrase. Repeat each phrase to check for accuracy. Once the words for the verses have been cracked, ask the kids to see if they can figure out what the colors represent.

(Note: You can also have kids match the picture that goes along with each song phrase and names of Jesus - see pic examples below).

SONG VISUALS MATCHING

WHAT YOU NEED:

My Redeemer Lives bundle

HOW TO PLAY:

Make two copies of each of the song visuals and place face down on the board. As everyone sings, invite kids one at a time,

to come to the board and flip over two pages and try and match the images. After all the images have been matched, play the Song Visuals Order Game (see below).

SONG VISUALS ORDER GAME

WHAT YOU NEED:

My Redeemer Lives bundle

HOW TO PLAY:

Kids try and place the song visuals in order of the song (verse, verses) as everyone sings. Mix up the pictures and repeat.

Extension: Put all the pictures in a pile face down & invite a child to come draw a picture. Have the kids try and figure out which song phrase the picture goes to and sing it. Repeat till you've done all the pics then place in order for each verse and sing again to check if correct.
