WHAT YOU NEED:

Kindness Begins with Me Flower printable - in the printables library or a big fake flower

HOW TO USE:

Have the kids pass the flower along while everyone sings. When the song ends, those holding the flowers can answer how they show kindness. Emphasize how kindness begins with us.

Repeat the song several times, giving many kids a chance to share ways they can show kindness.

2. WAYS TO SHOW LOVE HEARTS

WHAT YOU NEED:

Ways to Show Love printable

See the "As I Have Loved You, Love One Another" post for more on these hearts, which can be used for this song as well.

3. KINDNESS KING/QUEEN

WHAT YOU NEED:

Heart necklace printable - in the printables library

Print the heart out, cut out, put on a string to make a necklace.

HOW TO PLAY:

Invite a child up to the front. Let them stand on a chair. Put the heart necklace around them. Have the kids sing the song then call on two children to name something nice about the person standing on the chair. Repeat and invite someone else up to the chair. Repeat several times, as time allows.

4. KINDNESS TABLEAU

HOW TO PLAY:

Invite a small group of kids up to the front. As everyone sings, have the kids at front arrange themselves in a frozen scene. Repeat the song at least once to give the kids at the front time to arrange themselves in a scene. At the end of the song, let the kids sitting try and guess what kindness scene the kids at the front are depicting.

5. KINDNESS HANDSHAKE

HOW TO PLAY:

Let the kids come up with a friendship handshake. Repeat the song several times till the kids have their handshakes set.

Invite kids who are willing to come up and share their handshake with everyone to the front. Have the pair show their handshake as everyone sings. Repeat and invite more pairs up to the front to share as time allows.

6. VISUAL INTRIGUE - DRAWING SHAPES

[Shapes Idea Credit: Annie Salazar]

WHAT YOU NEED:

Shapes song printable - click pic to go to the printable

HOW TO PLAY:

Trace the shapes on the board as singing.

Then have the kids draw them in the air as singing.

Repeat and invite a child up for each phrase to draw the shapes on the board.

Repeat and have the kids memorize the shapes. Erase from the board or just have the kids look down. Have the kids draw the shape with one hand on their palms or legs as they sing.

VARIATION: Use ribbon wands or egg shakers to trace the shapes in the air.

Here's an example from the 3rd Article of Faith (starting at 2:35). Also shows song actions (concrete representation of words) after the visual activity.

7. KINDNESS HEART JUMP

WHAT YOU NEED:

Hearts Shapes - Cut big hearts out of felt or very sturdy red poster board. Laminate, if desired for added durability. Cut as many hearts as you need, depending on how you choose to play (see game options below).

Heart Shapes - Gold and Black

HOW TO PLAY:

Option 1: Two students at a time

Lay four hearts in two separate lines (8 hearts total) but separate each by about 2 feet.

Invite four kids up, standing on opposite ends of each other, by the first heart in the line, one child in front of the other (i.e. in line). The second two kids in line wait for their turn (for the second phrase of the song).

As everyone sings, the first two children jump, to the big beat, on each heart, getting closer to each other with each jump, while the rest of the primary sings and taps the regular beat. Once the first two children sit down, sing the next phrase of the song and the next two children

I want to be kind to everyone, for that is right you see! (STOP. SHAKE HANDS OR GIVE HIGH FIVE. SIT DOWN.)

   jump                       jump                jump                    jump

So I say to myself remember this...Kindness begins with me! (STOP. SHAKE/FIVE. SIT)

        jump               jump                    jump                             jump

Repeat and invite more kids up to have a turn.

Option 2: By class (small circles), small group upfront, or whole primary (big circle)

The amount of hearts on the floor you need will depend on which formation you use...

Lay hearts in a circle in the floor. Students jump from heart to heart, to the big beat as singing. Optional: Include one GOLD heart and one BLACK heart in each circle. At the end of the song, whoever is on the black heart is out (goes and sits down-still taps their heart, legs or claps to the beat as singing), and whoever is on the gold heart gives quick high-five to the person who was out.

Message: When you explain the game to the kids before playing, BRIEFLY mention that it's good to do kind things. It's easy to do kind things for people who are nice to you but, did you know Jesus also said, "But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you." (Matthew 5:44). Read the scripture then very quickly talk about how that means being kind and doing kind things, even though it's hard, to those that are mean to them.

If you do this in one or two groups only, you can ask the kids that landed on the gold heart to name something kind they can do, and the kids that landed on the black heart to name something mean. Or, you can include situations already written on the back of the hearts and read them between repeats. Use situations the children will related to.
