WHAT IS A SOUND STORY?

A sound story is an interactive story (secular and religious playlists available) where kids move, sing, make sounds, and play along (including instruments) to the story being told.

DON'T HAVE INSTRUMENTS AT HOME OR CHURCH?

No problem! Just use whatever you have - even if it's just a couple of pencils at church or pots and pans and other objects at home! Virtually anything can be an instrument.

What's In The Bag?

[churchofjesuschrist.org]

WHAT YOU NEED:

Four small, undesirable items—such as a bottle cap, twig, or wad of tissue—with string tied around each one; one small object to represent something of value (such as a ring to symbolize eternal life) with string tied around it; and a small bag or container.

Place the objects you have tied with string into the bag or container so that the objects are hidden but an equal amount of each string hangs over the side of the bag. Ask a child to choose a string and pull an item out of the bag. Then replace the object and string, let another child take a turn, and so on. Show the class all the hidden objects, and explain the value of the desirable one.

Explain that it is difficult to make a correct choice when we don’t know what we are choosing. Heavenly Father wants us to know good from evil so we can choose what is right. Tell the kids that because of Adam & Eve chose to have knowledge of good and evil (because of the "fall"), we also have the ability to know right from wrong and choose for ourselves.

“Because of the Fall, we are blessed with physical bodies, the right to choose between good and evil, and the opportunity to gain eternal life. None of these privileges would have been ours had Adam and Eve remained in the garden” (Gospel Principles, p. 33).

I Can Choose The Right/I Have The Power To Choose (Like Adam & Eve)

Read Moses 4:1-4.

What do we learn about God, Jesus Christ, and Satan from these verses? Why is agency so important to God’s plan that Satan would want to destroy it?

In Moses 4:3, we learn that Satan “sought to destroy the agency of man, which I, the Lord God, had given him.” Help the kids appreciate the ability to choose between right and wrong. (See "What's in the bag?" activity above).

Read to them from Moses 4:3: “The agency of man, which I, the Lord God, had given him.” Explain that this verse teaches us that God has given us the ability to make choices and because of the fall of Adam & Eve, we have the ability to make choices too. Help the children understand that even though life was difficult, Adam and Eve were happy because now they could learn and become like Heavenly Father (see Moses 5:10–11).

Talk to the children about some choices you made during the week, and help them think about choices they made.*

Do the "My Choices" activity (see this activity in the OBEDIENCE post). Sing together a song about making good choices, such as “Choose the Right Way” (Children’s Songbook, 160–61). Tell the children about a time when you made a good choice, and talk about how you felt because of your choice. Express your gratitude that you are able to choose the right, and testify that the children can also choose to do what is right.

Separated from the Savior

Topic: Because of Jesus Christ, I can repent and live with God again.

After Adam and Eve “fell” from the presence of God and became mortal, we needed a Savior so we could live again and return to our Father in Heaven. Jesus Christ was chosen to be our Savior before the world was created. Heavenly Father sent Jesus Christ to rescue us from the consequences of the Fall. Through His atoning sacrifice, Jesus made it possible for us to be resurrected after we die and forgiven of our sins when we repent.

Let kids place the items on the Because of Adam and Eve and Because of Jesus Christ play mat folder game as you read and discuss. Help the children identify the consequences of the Fall as you read together Moses 4:25; 6:48; Romans 5:12; 2 Nephi 2:22–23. Let them add the strips of what they learn under the first title. Then help them identify how Jesus Christ overcame sin and death as you read together Moses 5:8–11, 14–15; 6:59; Alma 11:42. Let them add the strips of what they learn under the second title.

Why are we thankful for Jesus Christ?

Help the children understand that we were happy to have the chance to come to earth (see Job 38:7). We would not have had this opportunity if Adam and Eve had not partaken of the forbidden fruit. We needed a chance to prove that we could choose good over evil. Gaining a physical body, having the privilege of choice, being separated from God, and being subject to death were all part of Heavenly Father’s plan for us to become like him.

I Can Pray To Heavenly Father Like Adam and Eve

Read Moses 5:4. Help the kids understand that when Adam and Eve left the Garden of Eden, they couldn’t be with Heavenly Father anymore, but they could pray to Him. Explain that we pray to Heavenly Father in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ (see Moses 5:8). What are some things we can say to Heavenly Father in our prayers?

See PRAYERS post for some great activities to go along with this topic and question.

The Fall Brought About Opposition In All Things

(2 Nephi 2:11)

Why were Adam and Eve “glad” after their Fall?

What do I learn from Genesis 3:1–7; Moses 4; 5:4–12 about God’s plan to redeem me through Jesus Christ?

See the lesson and video here from LatterDayKid on opposition.

And another one based on the story of Lehi and his family, from LivingScriptures here.
