Baptism Pennies Object Lesson

[Idea thanks to: NewswithNaylors]

WHAT YOU NEED:

Dirty Pennies

Vinegar

Salt

Bowl

Towel

Find a few tarnished pennies. Mix vinegar and lots of salt together and show your children how the pennies, which represent us, become clean after being washed (baptized).

Talk about how after we are baptized, we are completely clean from any mistakes we've made. Discuss the age of baptism (eight), the importance of being immersed in the water, and a few other simple details. Talk briefly about Alma baptizing people (Alma leaves wicked King Noah and preaches of Christ).

Let them color the "Alma Baptizes in the Waters Mormon" coloring page.

OTHER RELATED IDEAS

MATTHEW 3:11–17; MARK 1:9–11; LUKE 3:21–22

To teach about baptism and the gift of the Holy Ghost, consider displaying a dirty object and letting family members wash it with water. How does this activity represent baptism? Then ask family members to talk about some of the cleansing characteristics of fire. Why is the gift of the Holy Ghost described as a “baptism of fire”? (See Bible Dictionary, Holy Ghost.”)

JOHN 3:1–21

When Nicodemus came to Jesus in private, he was a cautious observer. Later, however, he publicly defended Jesus (see John 7:45–52) and joined the believers at the Savior’s burial (see John 19:38–40). What teachings do you find in John 3:1–21 that might have inspired Nicodemus to follow Jesus and be born again?

The Prophet Joseph Smith taught, “Being born again, comes by the Spirit of God through ordinances” (Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Joseph Smith [2007], 95). What role did your baptism (being “born of water” [John 3:5]) and confirmation (being born “of the Spirit” [John 3:5]) play in being born again? What are you doing to continue this process of change? (see Alma 5:11–14).

Acts 19:1-7

These teachings from the Prophet Joseph Smith might help your family discuss Acts 19:1–7:

“Baptism by
water is but half a baptism, and is good for nothing without the other half—that is, the baptism of the Holy Ghost. . . . ‘To be born of water and of the Spirit’ meant to be immersed in water for the remission of sins and receive the gift of the Holy Ghost thereafter. This was given by the laying on of the hands of one having authority given him of God” (Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Joseph Smith, 95). What blessings have come to us from receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost?

ROMANS 6:3–6

What did Paul say in these verses about the symbolism of baptism? Paul taught that the gospel of Jesus Christ should change the way we live. What statements in Romans 6 describe how following the Savior has helped you “walk in newness of life”? (verse 4). Perhaps your family could plan to attend an upcoming baptism. Or someone in your family could share pictures or memories from his or her baptism. How does making and keeping our baptismal

covenants help us “walk in newness of life”?

Baptism Play Mat Folder Game

WHAT YOU NEED:

Baptism Play Mat Folder Game

Includes:

*Baptism Prep - teach kids how to prepare for baptism

*Baptismal Covenants - teach kids about the covenants they make at baptism

*Baptism Q&A - teach kids the logistics - what when, why, how's, etc. of baptism

*Gifts of Baptism

Using the "Jesus was Baptized" play mat pages, as you read through the account of Jesus being baptized - (Matthew 3:11, 13–17; Mark 1:9–11; Luke 3:15–16, 21–22); have the kids listen for the answers to the questions and match the answer bubbles to the question bubbles.

Also sing, "Baptism" Children's Songbook #100 together to answer the questions.

Then, tell the kids to listen or sing along to the second verse of “I Like My Birthdays.”

To be baptized as Jesus was

By one who holds the priesthood true

And thus obey God’s holy laws

Is just the thing I want to do.

Ask the kids how they will we be baptized (or how they were baptized) if they are/were baptized the same way Jesus was? (By immersion-going all the way under the water- and by someone with priesthood authority - see Aaronic Priesthood lesson idea suggestions in CFM Families).

Once all the question and answers have been matched, have your kids compare what you learn from the accounts of the Savior’s baptism with what happened during your baptisms (see picture chart below for reference).

Preparing for Baptism

Using the “Becoming a Member of the Church of Jesus Christ" play mat pages, have a child place the word strip “baptism” on the third step. Tell the children that baptism is the third step in becoming a member of the Church of Jesus Christ.

Ask the kids if they know the 4th article of faith and that it tells us the steps to becoming an official member of the church. As you all sing 4th Article of Faith together, have the kids put the remaining steps to becoming a member strips on the play mat page.

"We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost."

Ask the kids what else they need to do to prepare for baptism... Using the "I Can Prepare For My Baptism," play mat pages, discuss the ways they can prepare for baptism and the accompanying questions: Show them the footprints. Tell the kids that the footprints represent steps that will lead them to baptism. Discuss each step and have the kids answer the questions. As they do, have the kids place the footprints on the page (action footprints on the left footprints and answer footprints on the right footprints).

Baptismal Covenants

Using the "Baptismal Covenants" play mat pages, teach children about the covenants they make at baptism. Kids match the scripture references with their meaning strips (ex: "come into the fold of God" = become a member of His church).

After you finish talking about baptismal covenants, remind the children that each Sunday in church when they take the sacrament, they should remember Jesus Christ’s Atonement as well as the promises they made to our Heavenly Father when they were baptized.

Baptismal Gifts

Using the "Baptismal Gifts" play mat pages, teach children about the gifts they receive at baptism. Kids match the scripture references with the gifts (ex: Mosiah 18:9 = become a member of His church).

After you finish talking about baptismal covenants, remind the children that each Sunday in church when they take the sacrament, they should remember Jesus Christ’s Atonement as well as the promises they made to our Heavenly Father when they were baptized.

My Baptism Bag

When you're baptized, you make a covenant, or promise, to always remember Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. You can remember your covenant by making a baptism bag.

Find or make a white bag. Cut out the pictures below, or find some real items to put in your bag. If you haven't been baptized, make this bag to help you look forward to baptism!
